**What is EigenLayer?**

The main idea behind the platform is to provide [ETH stakers](https://www.stakingrewards.com/earn/ethereum-2-0/) with the ability to opt into the AVS trust network, which can be compared to the Interchain Security (ICS) concept of Cosmos. ICS allows appchains to incentivize Cosmos validators to participate in validation by offering them block rewards.

EigenLayer aims to transform Ethereum into a security-sharing network by introducing a restaking mechanism and free-market governance.

**Here’s how it works:**

**1. Restaking**: This concept involves restaking ETH that has already been staked on the Ethereum PoS chain. Ethereum validators can download and run the node software, and validate both the Ethereum PoS chain and AVS simultaneously, provided they use the EigenLayer contract. ETH stakers can also participate in restaking.

**2. Free-market governanc**e: EigenLayer creates an environment where validators can freely participate in the AVS validation process based on risk/reward preferences. Validators can maximize their returns by staking in the AVSs they want to support, while AVSs can build a stable network of trust early on.

**EigenLaer Innovation**

EigenLayer brings several advantages, one of which is alleviating capital costs. Instead of Ethereum L1 and AVS vying for limited capital independently, they can now cooperate and share resources. This enables ETH stakers to increase their profits by staking on both the Beacon chain and the AVS. Moreover, AVS no longer needs to offer an aggressive staking pool during the initial bootstrapping phase, which reduces the cost burden.

**What are the benefits of EigenLayer?**

Some of the benefits of EigenLayer are:

- It provides cheaper and higher bandwidth than the Ethereum mainnet.
- It increases the interoperability of protocols on Ethereum and, thus the rate of innovation.
- It attracts more capital into the Ethereum ecosystem to take advantage of the extra yield.
- It increases security for protocols that can leverage the mainnet by using EigenLayer.
- It reduces the capital cost for protocols that need to bootstrap their own validator set.
- It allows users to restake their ETH and receive double staking yield from both Ethereum and other protocols.

**What are the risks of EigenLayer?**

Also, there are some risks of EigenLayer:

- Collusion risk: Many operators could collude to attack a set of AVSs at the same time and compromise their security.
- Slashing risk: Users who restake their ETH could face slashing penalties from both Ethereum and the AVSs they secure, depending on their restaking method and the slashing conditions of each protocol.
- Single point of failure risk: EigenLayer receives the withdrawal credentials from ETH stakers. If it is exploited and has a significant amount of ETH staked, this creates a systemic risk for the mainnet.
- Centralization risk: If many stakers secure one app and get slashed, that could have bad consequences for Ethereum.

**ReStaking Primitive**

EigenLayer restaking primitive is a new mechanism in crypto-economic security that allows users to reuse their staked ETH or liquid staking tokens on the consensus layer. Users who stake ETH can opt-in to EigenLayer smart contracts to restake their ETH and extend security to other applications built on the network, such as bridges, data availability layers, oracles, etc.

By doing so, they can earn additional rewards from both Ethereum and the applications they secure. However, they also face additional slashing risks from both layers. Restaking is a novel way of rehypothecating staked ETH and creating a marketplace for decentralized trust.

**Restaking influence on APY**
If staking rewards are regularly collected and restaked, then the total percentage of income will grow. EigenLayer will ask permission to move the specified token from your wallet to compound your profit.

Let's look at an example. If you make a $100,000 monthly compounding deposit at the current 4.4% interest rate, your APY will be 4.489%. Calculation used: 100,000 × (1 + 0.044 ÷ 12)^(12). By the end of the year, your balance will be $104,489.

On the other hand, if compound interest is compounded daily, your final balance will be $104,497, with an APY of 4.497% by the end of the year. Calculation used: 100,000 × (1 + 0.044 ÷ 365)^(365).

**Shared Security with Eigenlayer using IBC**

Eigenlayer allows Ethereum validators to restake their Ethereum. This allows consumer chains of Eigenlayer to borrow the security from the Ethereum network.

Polymer Labs [suggests](https://polymerlabs.medium.com/modular-ibc-for-the-modular-world-9fc021f6322e) if EigenLayer integrates IBC, [cross chain validation](https://github.com/cosmos/ibc/blob/main/spec/app/ics-028-cross-chain-validation/README.md) can be used to add EigenLayer validators into the active validator set of the consumer chain. Otherwise, a consumer chain can still inherit some protection at the IBC connection level for connected chains.

As an example of the IBC ecosystem, let’s look at Cosmos. [Cosmos](https://cosmos.network/) is a burgeoning ecosystem of interconnected applications and services working towards a decentralized future. Also known as the “Internet of Blockchains,” all blockchains built with Cosmos SDK can communicate seamlessly, thanks to IBC.

Cosmos released the Cosmos SDK, a framework for building IBC-compatible blockchains, along with the Cosmos Hub, where all IBC-compatible blockchains are connected using the IBC standard. Cosmos is analogous to interconnected constellations, hence the name “Cosmos.”

**Conclusion**

2023 has undoubtedly been the year of account abstraction. Even though the concept is nowhere new, with [early discussions](https://blog.ethereum.org/2015/07/05/on-abstraction) dating back to the beginning days of Ethereum, the industry made its [biggest leap this year](https://sixdegree.xyz/research/Half-Year-Data-Report-of-ERC4337-by-Sixdegree.pdf) in bringing working smart contract wallets to hundreds of thousands of users.

Our team at CyberConnect has been at the forefront of building and growing consumer crypto applications. Here, we’re taking a new perspective on social media, building towards a decentralized future where users exercise complete ownership and control over their social data, while developers can innovate permissionlessly. In almost three years, over 50 teams have built web3 applications utilizing the CyberConnect social network protocol, and have cumulatively registered [1.2M+ users](https://dune.com/cyberconnecthq/cyberconnect-link3-metrics), creating 1.9M+ units of social content. In the past 4 months alone, we’ve deployed over 500,000 ERC-4337-compatible smart accounts on Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Linea, opBNB, and Base. At the time of writing, that accounts for almost [50% of all the smart accounts](https://dune.com/niftytable/account-abstraction) that exist today across all blockchains. CyberAccounts have generated over [1M UserOperations](https://dune.com/cyberconnecthq/cyberaccount-cyberconnects-4337-smart-account) and more than USD 1.2M has been deposited in CyberWallet for gas.

### So, why CyberWallet?

One of the most pivotal insights on our journey in building and growing consumer crypto applications emerged while navigating the challenges in user onboarding. Even though decentralized applications and protocols are fairly accessible to crypto-native users, the intrinsic complexity of blockchains and crypto wallets creates a high barrier for regular users to explore the web3 ecosystem. The most significant of these complexities include:

1. Transaction signing and the gas fee system

2. Cryptographic key management

3. Isolated blockchains

Like most other crypto teams, we want to make web3 more accessible to a wider audience. Instead of waiting for someone else to build a solution, we addressed these challenges head-on and developed [CyberWallet](https://bit.ly/3svmoIZ), an ERC-4337-compatible smart contract wallet.

We bet on [ERC-4337](https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-4337) because it aims to make blockchains user-friendly, increase their security, and enhance the overall functionality of wallets and transactions. Of all the enhancements it offers to the existing infrastructure, we believe the most crucial ones are:

**Flexible Authentication Layer**

ERC-4337 introduces a versatile system for managing who can access and control blockchain accounts. This flexibility means users can choose how to manage their private keys, which is essential for account access. They can either opt for:

1. **Self-Custodial Management**: Manage keys independently, using a familiar wallet interface like [MetaMask](https://metamask.io/), where users are solely responsible for their keys' safety.

2. **Shared Key Management**: Share the responsibility of managing keys with trusted parties or across multiple devices using advanced methods like Multi-Party Computation (MPC) or cloud enclaves. This can add extra security layers, as keys are not held in one place but distributed and managed collectively.

This flexibility opens the door to a number of innovative applications, like 2-factor authentication and session keys for blockchain accounts.

**More Efficient Transactions by Decoupling Gas Payments**

ERC-4337 introduces an alternative structure for processing blockchain transactions that simplifies the user experience. It does this by using a new kind of transaction, a UserOperation, which separates the transaction from the complexities of paying gas fees. This enables a 'gas-sponsored' experience where users no longer have to pay transaction fees themselves. Instead, a marketplace of gas sponsors—like blockchain companies—could emerge, where these sponsors voluntarily cover the transaction costs for users. This could play a significant role in the early stages of web3 applications by reducing barriers for users.

**Programmable Modular Account**

Smart accounts pave the way for a new generation of programmable accounts, greatly expanding the design space for developers to build novel account solutions in web3. For example, by utilizing standards like [ERC-6900](https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-6900), we can offer users enhanced account functionality with modular and extensible features. This includes but is not limited to, session keys, multi-signature authentication, and on-chain guardians. The result is a ‘smart’ web3 account that can adapt to the diverse and evolving requirements of users, providing a seamless and secure interface for engaging with decentralized applications.

Unfortunately, despite these advantages, ERC-4337’s full potential has yet to be realized. While many in the industry have been touting its potential in onboarding the next billion users onto crypto, there’s a reason it hasn’t taken off at the speed many of us expected.

As we set forth on this journey to bring a robust account abstracted smart contract wallet to market, it quickly became clear to us that pioneering work often meets unanticipated obstacles. In the spirit of camaraderie and collective progress, we want to share the challenges we faced with the hope that we can move together quickly to address them as an industry.

### The Challenges

**Single Domain Stateful Architecture**

One of the key differences between an EOA and a smart contract account is that the EOA is stateless, while the smart contract account is stateful. States, like the initial access key setup, are bound to a specific smart contract account on a blockchain. This means that they are stored on each blockchain and [do not magically propagate to others](https://vitalik.ca/general/2023/06/20/deeperdive.html). Therefore, managing a smart contract account in a multi-chain setup is not as easy as switching a network inside an EOA wallet.

To get around this, at CyberWallet, we utilize [CREATE2](https://docs.openzeppelin.com/cli/2.8/deploying-with-create2) to generate deterministic account addresses from initial access keys. Important to note that for now, we assume the initial access keys are the same across different EVM-compatible blockchains. This is to provide a familiar user experience for multi-chain account addresses, similar to EOA wallets. However, because access keys may need to change over time, this presents a new challenge. While technologies like [Keystore](https://vitalik.ca/general/2023/06/20/deeperdive.html) are very appealing, we believe that in the short term, developing cross-domain infrastructure and messaging channels is definitely needed to address multi-chain state management.

**Gas: Estimation, Overhead, and Management Across Blockchains**

One of the biggest challenges we faced was conducting gas estimation for different blockchains. While L1 blockchains have straightforward gas estimation, ERC-4337 Gas Estimation for L2s is exponentially more complex. `preVerificationGas` for a UserOperation is proportional to `L1_price/L2_price`, and in the case where this ratio increases from the time gas estimation happens until bundling, the `UserOperation` will be rejected. While adding a buffer (~25%) to `preVerificationGas` increases the likelihood of bundling, that also means users are stuck paying for this overhead, regardless of price fluctuations in L1 and L2 gas. We work hard to provide the right balance that offers ‘most likely’ bundling without rejection and the lowest gas overhead for users. Our friends over at Alchemy wrote an excellent [blog](https://www.alchemy.com/blog/l2-gas-and-signature-aggregators) about this problem.

On top of this, another rather well-known challenge is the gas overhead caused by ERC-4337 components like the EntryPoint contract and Paymaster. Granted, this seems like a major blocker for the mass adoption of smart accounts-powered web3 applications. However, we believe that proposed Ethereum upgrades like [EIP-4844: Proto-Danksharding](https://www.eip4844.com/) will significantly lower the gas cost on L2s and make this gas overhead negligible. Of course, as ERC-4337 adoption rates increase, smart contract accounts will soon be cheaper than EOAs on L2s as they start aggregating signatures to reduce the amount of data that needs to be stored on L1.

Finally, the true success of any technology is when it disappears from the end user experience. For web3 applications, this must manifest by the complexities of blockchains completely disappearing, even as users move across apps on different networks. However, gas management across blockchains comes with its own set of challenges. In CyberWallet, we introduced **SmartGas**, a universal gas credit represented in USD value. With SmartGas, users can deposit tokens as a gas credit on any supported EVM blockchain, which is then converted into their corresponding USD value at the time of deposit. Users may utilize this credit to cover gas fees when doing transactions on any of our supported blockchains.

**Fragmented Mempool**

Ideally, the alternative mempool introduced by ERC-4337 should be accessible and shared across different bundlers to maximize the chances of a UserOperation being included in a block. However, as the P2P mempool standard is still under development, and each bundler provider has their own mempool, we arrive, albeit hesitantly, at the crossroads of a fragmented mempool. Staying dedicated to our commitment to ensuring that users’ transactions are included in the block, we decided to connect several bundler networks behind our service to increase availability and prevent censorship. UserOperations are assigned to different bundlers and their traffic split changes dynamically based on a bundler’s error rate, RPC latency, and operation pending time.

Although helpful, this multi-bundler strategy comes with its own set of challenges. It may be possible that a user unknowingly generates duplicate operations on multiple mempools with one operation’s gas going to waste. In any case, the UserOperation path must be properly tracked should we want to support UserOperation replacement in case of network congestion. To address this, we developed a ‘UserOperation + PmData lifecycle’ to have state transition properly defined so that user won’t waste their gas credit and can do advanced UserOperation management, such as speed up transactions by paying higher gas.

**Testing the Limits: ERC-4337 Boundaries and Scalability**

Arguably, one of the most aggressive yet ambitious steps we’ve taken as a team was to test the boundaries of our ERC-4337 implementation by letting over 150k users claim their [CYBER token](https://link3.to/cyberconnect/post/ae8c8e2bac694aca8c7f8fd9aee3c3da6dfaf5c5427de9db52e030e66eed7e80)[ community rewards](https://link3.to/cyberconnect/post/ae8c8e2bac694aca8c7f8fd9aee3c3da6dfaf5c5427de9db52e030e66eed7e80). It was an audacious test in retrospect, to say the least, as over 185k UserOperations were generated on the claiming day, and 70 ETH was consumed as gas fees. Even the L1 gas price pumped up when we started the claiming event.

Here’s what happened:

Way too many UserOperations were submitted to multiple mempools across different bundlers in a short period. Subsequently, as the gas price increased, the gas estimation in the UserOperation was too low to be included on-chain. This resulted in an increasing number of UserOperations getting stuck in the mempool, unfortunately breaking the underlying bundler infrastructures. Reasons for failure range from depleted database resources to issues with node memory, and the message queue getting stuck. Our production environment experienced about one hour of downgraded service. Now is probably a good time for a special shout-out to our friends over at [Pimlico](https://www.pimlico.io/), [Alchemy](https://www.alchemy.com/), and [Biconomy](https://www.biconomy.io/) for their endless efforts in providing support during this emergency.

Our biggest lesson from this event is to ensure a proper UserOperation rate limit based on the blockchain capacity. Developing an advanced gas estimation strategy is crucial here, as submitting many underpriced UserOperations quickly doesn’t make any sense and only creates pressure on the mempools. Not to forget, bundling multiple UserOperations in one transaction can somewhat mitigate this issue. We were specifically impressed with Alchemy’s bundler that bundled around 10 UserOperations in one transaction to accelerate transactions to be included onchain during this event.

### CyberWallet: What’s Next?

Ultimately, CyberWallet’s core mandate is to bring web3 to the world and onboard 1B+ new users into crypto. We realize the audacity of that goal and are moving quickly to achieve that. The next series of feature updates to CyberWallet include a number of fundamental changes that are sure to make the user experience of blockchain-based applications safer and more intuitive.

Here’s what’s coming:

**Improved User Onboarding with Passkeys**

Cryptographic key management remains a major complexity for users just starting their web3 journey. Currently, CyberWallet adopts a traditional EOA (like MetaMask) strategy for key management. We will continue to support that, and in fact, in the coming weeks, we will expand that to develop wallet interfaces such as a CyberAccount MetaMask Snap.

We also believe that there is no single key management framework that meets the diverse range of use cases like mobile environments, gaming, and social. Therefore, we are adopting the PassKey standard to bring web2 product UX to web3. The device-bound design of PassKey is important in terms of security and accessibility. Important to note that Ethereum doesn’t natively support such a signature yet, so for the time being, we’re using a cloud enclave solution. Fortunately, key management does not require vendor lock-in because of the flexible authentication layer of the smart contract account. We will continue to follow developments in Ethereum, like [EIP-7212](https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-7212), to adopt more progressive, and decentralized solutions.

**Cross Domain Framework**

With the emergence of more L2s and L1s, the isolation of blockchain systems is becoming a serious problem in navigating UX challenges. This is a complex problem and needs wider industry collaboration. We are actively researching and participating in topics like cross-rollup interoperability, AMPs (Arbitrary Message Passing Protocols), and independent mempool frameworks like Flashbot SUAVE, Anoma, etc. We believe a properly implemented cross-domain framework will elevate web3 UX significantly, and, therefore, become a core foundation for the future development of CyberWallet.

**Intent-based Design**

Paradigm recently helped revive [intent-based architectures](https://www.paradigm.xyz/2023/06/intents). ‘Declarative paradigm’ is not a new concept; in fact, many web2 systems are already built upon this programming design principle. It’s interesting to see such design thinking being adopted into blockchain systems. We are actively exploring use cases where users can express and execute their intent with multiple staged transactions. These use cases will be tested in the new version of the CyberWallet app in the coming months.

**CyberID and Multi-Chain Naming Solution**

The account states, such as underlying access keys, tend to change over time. We’ve found that it’s not practical to build upon the assumption that users will always have the same account address in a multi-chain world. In fact, it’s impossible to get the same account address in some blockchains, such as zkSync, even with CREATE2. Gnosis Safe wrote an excellent [blog](https://safe.mirror.xyz/4GcGAOFno-suTCjBewiYH4k4yXPDdIukC5woO5Bjc4w) about smart account addresses in a multi-chain landscape. We are developing our in-house naming solution called [CyberID](https://link3.to/cyberconnect/post/94e7b558022376aff30fabe6c8ed07be82b6ffdf6bd2c6665cdd054dc54b4da0) to allow users to track their account-related info such as counterfactual address, historical validators, and deployment status in a multi-chain setup. Therefore, users and dApps only need to use this human-readable identifier when interacting with CyberWallet.

User onboarding remains one of the most crucial bottlenecks in bringing web3 to the world. The developments in account abstraction, especially most recently with ERC-4337, have been extremely significant and have brought the industry one step closer to mass adoption. If you’re reading this, there’s no doubt you can name a few killer features of Web3: decentralization, transparency, and increased control over your assets. Luckily, these principles can be applied to pretty much anything that people do or own. Real estate is no exception.

## Real estate in web3

Lately, there’s been an intensifying trend for the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA) – things from the off-chain world, tangible (from gold to real estate) and intangible (public bonds, stocks). **Tokenization means their ownership rights are put on the blockchain**. A tokenized villa in Bali belongs to those who hold the tokens issued specifically for this villa.

### How it all started

The concept of tokenization emerged in 2001. It was something totally different back then: sensitive cardholder information was replaced by so-called tokens to ensure the secure transfer of data.

**The ground for tokenization, as we know it today, was laid in 2015 when the Ethereum blockchain was launched.** Smart contracts introduced programmable tokens that could represent ownership of anything from the digital and the physical world.

**The first large project dedicated to the tokenization of RWA **was built in 2017. tZero was a platform allowing users to trade security tokens, it raised $134 million in an ICO.

**The first cases of real estate tokenization date back to 2018.** A luxury $30M apartment in Manhattan was tokenized on Ethereum, but the deal was pulled following a lack of demand.

A more successful case took place in Colorado – owners of the St. Regis Aspen Resort sold real estate security tokens worth $18M on the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform. Later, they released Aspen coin in partnership with an SEC-registered operator. However, the laws were still not developed enough to make real estate tokenization a massive trend.

## Tokenization today: a global trend

Today, the market of real estate crowdinvesting and fractional ownership is growing at a huge pace. According to [++research++](https://www.polarismarketresearch.com/industry-analysis/real-estate-crowdfunding-market), it will surge 45% yearly until it** reaches $250B in 2030 from today’s $10B**. One of the reasons for this is the increasing adoption of cryptocurrency: the global number of crypto users is expected to reach 1 billion by 2030.

## Perks of tokenized real estate

**Real estate is a huge $330 trillion market that offers a very good income, but it’s hard to invest in it in a traditional way **– you have to own a lot of money and be ready to spend months.

**Therefore, tokenization has the potential to disrupt the traditional market** by offering increased liquidity, fractional ownership, transparency, lower transaction costs, and faster processing times both to investors and owners. **Tokenization of real estate unlocks a number of benefits:**

- **Liquidity.** The traditional real estate market is illiquid – it takes months to sell or buy a property. Tokens are a much more liquid asset that can be easily traded.

***Today, we are onboarding ourselves into Web3 Social by launching our blog on Mirror and Link3, to share our views with the world. First up, Web3 social.***

## **Introduction to Web3 Social**

The use of decentralized, blockchain technology is changing the way our world operates. While the most popular use case of blockchain has been financialization (tokens, DeFi, and NFTs), the technology is now being used to power new forms of identity, data ownership, and communication enablement in the form of blockchain-powered social networks, known as **Web3 Social**. In this article, we examine the core value propositions of Web3 Social, how the various protocols and platforms work, the level of product-market fit seen today and its potential to become the future of how we interact, build communities, make friends and transact online.

The best way to understand the viability of Web3 Social is to first understand how past waves of innovation came to be and assess if Web3 Social shares similar characteristics. Waves of innovation are found at the crossroads of technology innovation and new consumer / business value; they change the way our world works and in hindsight often feel obvious. Just like the real world, tsunamis are often followed by several large waves. For example, silicon chips and the internet were tsunamis followed by waves of personal computing, e-commerce, digital financial services, and web2 social platforms. In web3, Blockchain is the new tsunami, followed by the waves of decentralized finance, dapps and NFTs. Will Web3 Social be a new wave? Will it provide enough additional value than its predecessors? Let’s dive into the proposed Key Value Propositions Web3 Social offers.

## **Key Value Propositions** 

### 1. Open Data & Portability 

The social media applications we use today leverage complex underlying data networks that make our experiences possible. These are called “**social graphs**”; interconnected data structures that map our digital relationships and interactions, who we follow and subscribe to, what we like and more. In Web 2.0, social graphs are private systems with all assets, data and behavioral analysis owned or controlled by internet companies. As users, we lack any real ownership or control of this data and as a consequence social graphs are “siloed” and walled-off  from other platforms; our identities and experiences will likely never be connected across platforms. To use new platforms, users have to rebuild past social connections and history, but this comes with significant friction, leading to platform lock-in. If end users want to switch from one application to another, they have to start from scratch.

How is Web3 Social different? For one, it aims to establish a base layer where users' social graph data is transparent, permissionless, portable, and most importantly in their control. Let us call this model “**open data**.”

**Open data** allows users to easily onboard new applications built on the same social graphs without having to deal with this redundancy issue. Anyone who uses Web3 Social platforms can take their data to whichever app they want. Imagine a world where Joe Rogan and Spotify decided to part ways. Today, Joe Rogan and other creators have limited access to their fans, subscribers and content, and he’d, in some respects, have to start over on another platform. With Joe Rogan’s popularity, that shouldn’t be an issue, but for 99% of artists, this is a big deal.

Isolated data prevents independent developers from tapping into these social graphs and **building new experiences and applications for users** on top of them. Consequently, innovation in the social app space has a massive cold-start problem. New social applications are frequently being developed, but often fail as they are not able to get traction. With Web3 Social, users may be more willing to try new social experiences if they can bring their data and friends along. An example of a new, novel Web3 Social experience is Link3, a social application built on the CyberConnect protocol. Link3 is a mixture of LinkedIn, Medium, and Eventbrite, but with crypto primitives embedded within it — allowing you to connect your wallet, NFTs, ENS names to build your profile & reach. There are many more examples of novel social experiences stimulated by Web3 Social that will be covered in following sections.

Eliminating data silos also lowers the barrier to entry for new developers, reducing the network effect of gated social graphs that otherwise monopolize user data. Open data can allow applications to read and write data to ***multiple*** social graph protocols; users can connect their IDs from multiple Web3 Social profiles to one application, and to many applications. Phaver is a good example of a Web3 Social application that connects the social graph of users from different networks in one interface, by integrating with both Lens Protocol and CyberConnect.

Open data standards simply allow us to create more without borders.

We are seeing examples of open data within existing Web2 Social applications today. META, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, recently launched Threads. While the long-term value of Threads as an application is yet to be determined, Threads allows users to instantly follow and connect with their Instagram friends as soon as they sign up. However, your data on Instagram and Threads is still siloed within the walls of META. Threads announced the possibility of integrating with ActivityPub, a standard communication protocol that allows users to interact with all platforms using ActivityPub, but has not integrated yet.

The walled gardens of Web2 Social also have a tremendous impact on businesses operating on those platforms. Reddit recently enforced API pricing which led to several applications shutting down, much to the outcry of the community. This would not be a problem if Reddit was built on Web3 Social infrastructure as these apps & communities would be able to  bring their followers and content to new platforms with more favorable terms or value alignment.

On the content creation side, a lack of platform lock-in will give creators the choice to migrate to a different application while retaining ownership of their social graph data, mitigating situations where platforms change their monetization, moderation, or revenue sharing models. In Web2 Social, data silos inhibit creators from having this freedom of choice.

### 2. Composability: unlocking a sea of new possibilities

Since Web3 Social protocols are deployed on blockchains, they are often highly composable with other smart contracts and protocols. This open data architecture allows developers of new crypto innovations to freely integrate with Web3 Social protocols & apps — like connecting a user’s on-chain history to populate their social profile, displaying the NFTs they own as credentials and enabling them to turn their content and posts into NFTs and potentially sell them. Composability is lacking in traditional social media, and even in the few cases where crypto was integrated with Web2 Social, it was neither native nor complete.

Coupled with open data, web3 composability enables creative developers to integrate their social platform with crypto protocols — from DeFi apps, metaverse games, DAOs, NFTs and everything in between. For example, Warpcast is a platform built on the Farcaster protocol that allows users to locate other members of the same NFT communities, holders of the same POAP, and even link ENS domains to a user’s profile. These functionalities are enabled by connecting an Ethereum address to a profile, creating an on-chain holistic identity. Other platforms also offer similar features, with some like Phaver allowing users to connect their Lens profiles, ENS domains, and Farcaster ID to a single profile. Another example of Web3 composability is CyberConnect’s subscription models, which allow users to define creator-to-subscriber relationships through the power of SubscribeNFTs.

Another possibility is  SocialFi, a concept Mason Nystrom from Variant Capital [wrote about recently](https://variant.fund/articles/socialfi-financial-component-web3-social-media-apps/). SocialFi refers to the integration of the social layer and the financial layer of someone's digital life. Imagine what traditional social media platforms would do if they had unlimited access to traditional financial exchanges, banks, lending providers, crowdfunding platforms, etc. Other SocialFi features include micropayments enabled on a Web3 Social app, on-chain lending credit scores connected to a social identity and biometric proof-of-personhood connected to a social profile.

The possibilities for crypto composability are endless, as Web3 primitives continue to expand and develop - new experiences await.

### 3. Next-Level Community Enablement

Blockchain infrastructure is a powerful tool to bring people together over a common purpose. We saw this in the last few years with token-powered communities coordinating a bid for the American Constitution (ConstitutionDAO), vote for DeFi protocol governance (Uniswap, Safe, Maker, Gnosis), invest in digital art (e.g. PleasrDAO) and build social clubs around NFT collections. Participants became owners and highly engaged stakeholders.

Combining new innovations like dynamic NFTs with emerging Web3 social protocols will take these experiences to the next level. This can be further augmented by combining real-world data into Web3; for example certifications, purchases, relationships, more relevant communities can be spun up instantly, genuine relationships will be more easily formed, and new forms of commerce will emerge.

Visualize a web3 social graph connected by holistic identities (say, NFT profiles or other forms of tokenization) that can cross-reference similar characteristics with each other. Open data and transparency allow platforms to automatically spin up communities based on profiles sharing similar characteristics with other profiles in the social graph.

Some thought experiments:

- A user of a LinkedIn-esque web3 platform could attach an identifier to their profile that associates them with their alma mater university, let’s say in the form of an NFT attribute. The platform could automatically create an alumni networking community for users with the same alma mater; in similar ways, communities can be created automatically, globally, and exempt from web2 data moats using such methods. Not only does it allow individuals to join communities, but it also allows artists, writers, influencers, and other creators to build communities with all those who follow them.
- Imagine an author who sells a book with an attached NFT, and every NFT holder (also an authenticated purchaser of the book) can join a community to talk about the book and communicate with the author. As we will see soon, there are also real examples of Web 3 community enablement, including users of Warpcast and other Web3 Social apps being able to easily find user profiles of others in the same NFT ownership community. These forms of global and unified community enablement transcend what web2 can currently do.

Orb, a Web3 Social application, is bringing some of these thought experiments to life. Orb allows for the transformation of any on-chain activity or possession into a cohesive community. Possessing a specific quantity of a particular ERC-20 token, holding an NFT ticket for a specific event, or collecting publications, for instance, can all be moulded into distinct communities. Web3 Social allows for new ways of building communities, make friends and at a much deeper level than what exists today.

### 4. Censorship Resistance & Ownership

Regardless of creed, belief or opinion, freedom of speech and expression is arguably a cornerstone of social media, though the limits are always under debate. Given the power and control traditional social platforms hold over our data, they are in an unparalleled position to moderate what is said online and deplatform users at their discretion. There is no recourse for the user other than to just deal with it.

A recent instance of platform moderation was revealed to the public after Elon Musk took over Twitter (now rebranded as “X”). The “Twitter Files”, a series of revealed internal Twitter documents, revealed how the company app was suppressing and controlling information on the platform behest of governments’ requests or information it deemed to be unsafe. While Elon advocated for truth and transparency with the “Twitter Files”, ironically, after Twitter rebranded to “X”, the company unceremoniously claimed the “@x” handle from a user. This also happened with the account who owned the “@music” handle.

These examples highlight how in traditional web2 platforms users are never truly the master of their own identity, account and in some cases their voice. Web3 social solves this - to an extent. Applications built on Web3 Social protocols *can* still moderate content, but users maintain full ownership and the option to leave one application for another and still keep their data, or even build their own censorship-resistant application if all else fails. The core tenet here is that there is no lock-in to a particular application – whenever users want to, they can abandon a social application and migrate to a brand new one, taking all their data with them.

### Key Value Propositions – Conclusion

What’s so exciting about Web3 Social is that it unlocks entirely new experiences for community, commerce, composability, engagement, ownership and identity, all while it serves to solve some of the core ills of existing Web2 Social platforms. New ways to build community, make friends and transact are around the corner.

What’s also exciting is the caliber of entrepreneurs entering the space. Within Superscrypt’s investments, Airstack, Collab.Land, Orb, Notifi and Salsa are solving different challenges on access, experience, or interoperability of Web3 Social.

There is still much work needed to bring Web3 Social to the masses; the technology and adoption is growing, but still in its infancy. We expect more iterations before true product-market-fit is achieved and will share more updates soon.

AI CREATIVITY FESTIVAL

**Worldcoin**, founded in 2019 by Sam Altman of Open AI, aims to create a cryptocurrency that can be distributed to as many unique users as possible, with the ultimate goal of providing a cryptocurrency to every individual.

The vision behind Worldcoin is to enhance the efficiency of the coin's usage compared to other cryptocurrencies that have more centralized distribution methods. Additionally, the long-term vision of Worldcoin is to contribute to the establishment of a fair income-sharing system through a universal basic income (UBI) facilitated by AI and automation.

One of the challenges faced by Worldcoin and similar initiatives is the difficulty in distinguishing real individuals from bots or fake accounts due to the growing capabilities of AI and the pseudonymous nature of cryptocurrencies. Human verification becomes increasingly complicated as AI technology advances, making it challenging to determine if a digital entity is a genuine person or an algorithm.

To address this issue, Worldcoin has introduced the concept of "Proof of Personhood" and developed a system that verifies individuals using biometric data. This approach sets Worldcoin apart as more than just a typical payment token; it is a comprehensive platform with various technical modules dedicated to addressing the complexities of identity verification and distribution of value. 
World ID is a blockchain-based solution that utilizes Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proofs for user identification while ensuring the privacy and security of user data. With World ID, individuals can verify their uniqueness without revealing any personal information. The developers envision that in the future, World ID could serve as a universal identifier for both Web2 and Web3 platforms.

The World ID system comprises physical devices known as "Orbs," which are responsible for scanning the user's iris. These Orbs are developed and maintained by the Tools for Humanity team, an affiliate of Worldcoin. The team is founded by Sam Altman, the creator of Worldcoin, but it is operated by individuals known as "Operators." Operators are not employees of the company; instead, they play a role in introducing new users to the system and assisting them with using the Orbs. For each verified person they assist, Operators receive a reward.

The World ID Protocol is responsible for processing the scanned data and recording it on the blockchain. The result of this process is the generation of proof of humanity, known as "Proof of Personhood." This proof is not linked to any personal data, ensuring the privacy and anonymity of users while confirming their uniqueness. The decentralized and secure nature of World ID makes it a promising solution for identity verification in both current and future digital environments.
World App is a mobile application developed by the Worldcoin project. It serves as a multifunctional tool, combining the features of a mobile wallet, an ID-card, and a means for generating, storing, and sharing World ID. On July 24, 2023, the platform was officially launched to the public, and simultaneously, the native WLD token was listed. At the time of the public launch, Worldcoin had already issued an impressive 2 million World IDs. These World IDs serve as unique identifiers for users, allowing them to verify their identity through the biometric data captured by the spheres without compromising personal information.

**Here's how the Worldcoin system works in action:**

1. Download World App: The user starts by downloading the World App on their smartphone. While not mandatory, they can choose to verify their email or phone number within the app.
2. Generate Private Key: The application generates a private key, which is stored locally on the user's device. Using this private key, an identity obligation is created, serving as proof of a public key that can be shared without revealing the key itself. Essentially, it acts as an encrypted wallet address.
3. Visit Orbs: The user then goes to the nearest Orb, which is a physical sphere device. They communicate their identity obligation to the Orb through a QR code in the app. Importantly, the Orb does not have access to the user's smartphone or the private key.
4. Iris Scan: The Orb reads the identity obligation and proceeds to scan the user's iris to confirm that the identity bond belongs to a real person.
5. Hashing and Verification: The scan data is hashed by the Orb and then signed. The signed hash is sent to the Worldcoin server, where a verifier checks its uniqueness to ensure that the same person hasn't been registered before.
6. Record and Storage: If the verification is successful, the identity obligation is recorded in the project's Merkle tree and stored on both the Ethereum and Optimism networks.
7. Obtain World ID: The World App then generates the user's unique World ID, confirming their identity. Having a verified World ID entitles the user to receive a reward of 25 WLD and opens up the possibility of receiving future rewards from the service.

In this way, users can securely and privately obtain their World ID, participate in the Worldcoin ecosystem, and potentially receive rewards for their participation.

ZK proofs provide a way to verify the authenticity of information without revealing the underlying data. This ensures that the user's interaction with third-party sites and their activity history cannot be tracked or linked back to their World ID.

By incorporating these privacy and security measures, Worldcoin aims to provide users with a secure and private way to verify their identity and interact with various services while maintaining their data confidentiality.

The centralization of these processes contradicts the decentralized nature of blockchain technology.
2. Operators' Role: Orbs operators, who play a crucial role in the verification process, are not direct employees of Worldcoin but work as contractors. 3. Data Leaks: Past incidents of hackers gaining access to operator accounts raise concerns about potential data breaches. While user data remains safe, the compromise of an operator's account could potentially lead to the theft of private keys, which would grant unauthorized access to user activity data.
4. Lack of Ongoing Communication: Once a user passes verification, there is little ongoing communication or security updates. This lack of regular updates and security measures could leave users vulnerable to potential attacks, especially if private keys are compromised.
5. Potential Black Market: The lack of continuous communication and user control over their wallets has led to the emergence of a black market for Worldcoin accounts in China. This further highlights the need for improved security measures and user control over their accounts.
6. Complexity of Verification Technology: The complex verification technology used by Worldcoin requires skilled operators to ensure proper functioning. Dependence on qualified service providers for verification introduces risks and potential points of failure.

Worldcoin aims to address some of these issues by providing more rights to token holders in the future to mitigate centralization concerns. However, it is clear that the verification process and reliance on operators present significant challenges for the project's long-term success and security. Continuous efforts to enhance security, decentralization, and user control will be crucial for the project's sustainability.

The WLD token is an ERC-20 token available on the Ethereum and Optimism networks. Originally, WLD was at the core of Worldcoin's vision, aiming to be a highly efficient cryptocurrency with fair distribution. However, the project's focus shifted towards World ID, and WLD somewhat transformed into a marketing tool. The distribution of WLD tokens through drops attracted many users to the platform, but the true value of the token became more speculative rather than tied to its original purpose.
