### Cyber Restaking Points

LRT, or Liquid Restaking Token, allows users to stake their ETH to accrue staking rewards and automatically restake their ETH in EigenLayer. LRT enjoys the both benefits of staking and restaking yield, and the liquidity to explore other opportunities within the ecosystem.

2. **How do I earn points in Cyber restaking?** 
You can accumulate points by restaking LRTs. Additional points are available by referring others to restake.

3. **What benefits do I get from inviting others to restake LRT?** 
You earn extra points based on your invitees' restaking points. You'll receive 15% of the restaking points from your direct invitees and 5% from your second-degree invitees (those invited by your invitees). Your referral code can be used for an unlimited number of times.

4. **When can I withdraw LRT?** 
You can withdraw any time and keep the points and yield already earned, without any waiting period.

5. **Where is the reward coming from?** 
The reward comes from native ETH staking yield + restaking yield from EigenLayer (including rewards for running AVS to power Cyber L2) + EigenLayer points + LRT points + Cyber Restaking points.

Introducing Cyber Restaking & Dual-Stake Model

**What is Savvy?**

Savvy is a DeFi protocol initially deploying on Arbitrum (followed by Avalanche then omnichain) that allows users to take an advance against their cryptocurrency in the form of a synthetic credit line. Borrowers both maintain the exposure of their choice collateral and gain access to immediate liquidity. Savvy harvests and auto-compounds the generated yield and attributes the yield to their loan balance, creating interest-free, auto-repaying loans.

Most other CDPs (Collateralized Debt Positions) allow depositors to use their collateral to borrow against their market value. To ensure the health of their loan, the Loan to Value (LTV) ratio must stay aligned, or the user’s crypto may be at risk of liquidation.

Savvy, on the other hand, removes the risk of liquidation. Liquidations can be avoided through our repayment model. Borrowers can repay their debt 1:1 with their original collateral or the Savvy synthetic tokens (i.e., svUSD/svETH/svBTC/svAVAX).

**How does Savvy DeFi work?**

Savvy users first deposit collateral (including USDC, USDT, DAI, ETH, and BTC) to a Savvy vault and select a yield-bearing strategy. Borrowers can mint a svToken line of credit up to 50% of the value of their collateral. Their deposited collateral is then used in the selected strategy to generate yield, and the generated yield gets attributed to the balance of the loan, effectively paying off the loan’s balance over time.

Another option for borrowers is to leave their deposit in a yield strategy, allowing borrowers to draw down the line of credit in the future. Alternatively, depositors can repay their debt early using either the base token or svToken, allowing borrowers to withdraw the collateral. Lastly, borrowers can self-liquidate their line using a portion of the collateral to repay the debt and allow them to remove whatever is remaining.

**Why does Savvy exist?**

Crypto allows anyone to enjoy financial strategies previously reserved only for those with access to traditional financial systems and strong credit history. Savvy opens this vehicle to the masses in a non-liquidating, auto-repaying fashion. Non-liquidating lending will become a compelling concept anyone can utilize. Savvy will enhance the system because of the composability that DeFi allows — making it easy to participate across various apps and services such as lending, staking, and yield farming.

**What is the SVY Tokens’ utility?**

At the core of Savvy is the SVY Utility token. The SVY token is a crucial part of the Savvy DeFi ecosystem. At a glance, the maximum supply of SVY will be set at 10,000,000 SVY and will be fully distributed over six years. Jointly organized by Web3 News Media Outlet Foresight News and Foresight Ventures, a crypto investment firm, Foresight 2023 took place on 10 April 2023 at Grand Hyatt, Hong Kong, and saw the gathering of various prominent figures in the Web3 community as they shared more about their projects and their views on the future of Web3.

With around 3,000 registered event participants and 12 million online attendees, Foresight 2023 featured exciting booths from [BitKeep](https://bitkeep.com/en/index), Shardeum, Bitget, and boasted an impressive lineup of 9 on-site panel discussions.

Moderated by Darren Woo, Director of Content at BitKeep, the headline discussion featured a star-studded panel that included Alex Pack, VC Parner of Hack, Yves La Rose, CEO of EOS Network Foundation, Diego Vidaurre, CEO of The Beacon, Tomi Fyrqvist, CFO & Co-Founder of Phaver, Greg Hammer, Director of Shardeum Ecosystem and Fundraising, and Juanna, Development Manager of Gitcoin Ecosystem.

“One of the trends that we’re seeing is that gaming is becoming the entry point of a lot of new users,” Yves says.

 > “Having a seamless onboarding process, and making their first experience as seamless as possible is important. Within the GameFi space, the gamer doesn’t care about what layer 1 is in the background. What he cares about is a good end-to-end process and for it to be made simple and straightforward, and we’re seeing more layer 1s prioritize that.”

Echoing his sentiments, Diego also had this to share on his endeavours in building up The Beacon, one of the top game projects on Arbitrum: “Creativity, having a good team, and possessing a strong sense of what players actually need, is what is required to build a good game,” he says.

“We’re noticing a great shift in the realm of blockchain games where game developers are starting to put games first and blockchain technology second . Which is therefore why we are noticing a great deal of game-first projects, which is always a great opportunity for end-users, but it also sets a remarkable precedent for other developers within the space as well.”

“For now, the gaming aspect of GameFi projects still needs work,” Yves agrees. “But it was crucial for the pioneers to come in and set the foundations and building blocks for Web2 developers to come in to Web3 en masse. We are already starting to see new developers coming in with the templates to better understand how to leverage blockchain technology, but that’s because they’ve seen how past projects have done it.”

Indeed, inward funding for GameFi increased by 83% in 2022 as compared to 2023, jumping from $2.9B to a staggering $5.4B.

### Opportunities for Growth

Generating popularity in blockchain usage, however, is certainly also contingent on building up reliable and good use cases, as Alex tells us.

“Stablecoins, for instance, are important because they bring massive use cases to a lot of different users around the world, and we want to capitalize on that,” he says firmly. “We want to bring more assets online and provide users with the ability to actually utilize their funds on Web3 and on blockchain and materialize them in the real world.”

At the event, Darren also shared that BitKeep has recently achieved its 10 million global user milestone, and is currently also pushing for more blockchains to be added on to its suite of over 90 supported mainnets, and in doing so, also prime its attention towards building up a good UX for all users. Envisioning itself to be the ultimate gateway for all Web3 users, BitKeep aims to provide everything that a user may potentially need to easily access the Web3 space in all its entirety, including an integrated swap feature, OTC function, DApp browser, launchpad, and NFT marketplace.

The push towards greater usage of blockchain also perhaps cements itself upon the failures of centralized institutions that were observed in recent times, Greg posits.

“The greatest opportunity right now is generating more demand on Web3 and via applying better real world use cases. The key thing here is to try and make decentralization as accessible as possible, because the countries that need it the most are also the same countries that arguably struggle with affording decentralization. With that, the greatest opportunity for business developers right now, is to solve this natural problem – and not just what is cool or trending at present.”

Tomi, who believes that social and gaming are the two sectors that hold promise currently, stating that “I am bullish on both these fronts, because that’s where the most amount of time we spend online is at. ### Hong Kong

“It is great that Hong Kong is being so receptive to crypto regulations, and this really bodes well for local communities and organizations,” Juanna explains to the panel. “We hosted a Greater China ecosystem fundraising round roughly 6 months ago, and we plan to continue hosting future rounds just like this. Additionally, we also want to implement diversity inclusion bonuses, because we want our communities to self-identify ther demographics and help them amplify that, so we are looking at perhaps implementing a Hong Kong or Greater China bonus in the future as well.”

“Hong Kong has been a melting pot for crypto usage and for crypto organizations for the longest time, and I think Hong Kong is probably one of the most important cities for crypto right now,” Yves says in agreement.

Analyzing historical trends, Diego also argues that his team has noticed a great influx of users pouring into his project from the Asian market, stating that “even though our marketing was mostly done in towards Western audiences, by sheer word of mouth, we’ve seen how an impressive 40% of our current market now lies within Hong Kong itself, as we realized that we need to focus our attention here.”

“We’ve had great opportunities with Foresight and BitKeep,” Tomi adds. “I myself perform most of my swaps on BitKeep, and we have also noticed that Hong Kong is an excellent place for crypto and for growing the greater Web3 ecosystem as a whole.”

Closing up the panel, Greg shares with us that Shardeum has been offered different opportunities to work with various investment firms in Hong Kong, and that Shardeum is also looking to set up a team within the region.

“One of the greatest analogies that I have is to always fish where the fish are swimming,” he tells us. “And Hong Kong presents itself as just that place to do so.”

### Blockchain Interoperability

Blockchains have emerged as a revolutionary technology with the potential to transform various industries by enabling secure, decentralized, and transparent data transactions. However, similar to the early days of the internet, blockchains face the challenge of [interoperability](https://study.bitkeep.com/en/?ht_kb=explaining-cross-chain-interoperability) and connectivity. The lack of communication and collaboration between different blockchain networks leads to isolated ecosystems that can not seamlessly share data and value.

Blockchain interoperability refers to the ability of different blockchain networks to communicate and interact with each other seamlessly, enabling them to share information on decentralized applications (DApps), assets, and functionalities. This is essential for the broader adoption of blockchain technology as it allows for the creation of more complex applications and services that span across multiple blockchain networks. Without interoperability, each blockchain network would operate in its own silo, limiting the potential of blockchain technology.

The importance of interoperability in the blockchain ecosystem cannot be overstated. It enables blockchain networks to work together to address the challenges faced by various industries, leading to the development of more innovative and efficient solutions. The seamless flow of data and value across different blockchain networks can accelerate the adoption of blockchain technology and enable businesses to tap into the benefits offered by blockchain networks.

### Analyzing Interoperability

A widely used method for facilitating cross-chain message transfers involves the implementation of a middle chain that provides consensus and validation services to enable the exchange of messages between chains. For instance, Polkadot’s Relay chain serves as the backbone of the platform.

An alternative method utilizes on-chain light nodes, which are connected to full nodes to ensure validation of every block header received from the opposing chain.

Both approaches offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, as the middle chain approach is cost-effective, but its reliance on a single point of failure lessens security, whereas the on-chain light node approach is highly secure, but is hindered by its high costs.

### Enter LayerZero

A possible solution to address these challenges is to combine the strengths of both methods while mitigating their limitations.

LayerZero Labs proposes to achieve this by utilizing an Ultra Light Node (ULN) as part of the LayerZero project. The ULN is a proposed solution that can facilitate cross-chain message transfers in a cost-effective and secure manner. By combining the consensus and validation features of the middle chain approach and the security features of the on-chain light node approach, the ULN may offer an ideal solution for cross-chain interoperability, which could facilitate the widespread adoption of blockchain technology.

### First, Some Context

In blockchain, an oracle is a trusted source of information that can be used to trigger smart contract execution. It is a software program or service that gathers and verifies data from external sources and relays it to the blockchain. This allows smart contracts to execute based on real-world events, such as weather conditions or stock prices, that are not available on the blockchain itself.

On the other hand, a relayer is a network node that helps transfer messages or assets between different blockchains or systems. Relayers facilitate cross-chain communication by submitting transactions or proofs of transactions to different networks. This enables the exchange of assets or information between different chains or systems without the need for a centralized intermediary.

Together, oracles and relayers can be used to create decentralized applications (DApps) that can access external data sources and communicate with other blockchains or networks. By using oracles and relayers, DApps can be designed to work with real-world data and other blockchains, making them more versatile and useful.

### Here's How LayerZero Works

LayerZero’s method utilizes on-chain light nodes, but in a much more economical way. It makes use of decentralized oracles to stream block headers on demand, so it doesn’t need to keep all block headers sequentially.

In brief, here's how LayerZero works:

When sending a message from one chain to another, the origin chain’s endpoint notifies the specified Oracle and Relayer of the message and its target chain. The Oracle then forwards the relevant block header to the target chain’s endpoint, and the Relayer submits a transaction proof. Once that proof is validated on the target chain, the message can be sent to its designated address.

### Use Cases of LayerZero

LayerZero’s technology offers a range of cross-chain functionalities, with its most direct application lying in bridging. The first DApp built on LayerZero was Stargate Finance, an omnichain bridging protocol that supports transfers across multiple L1 and L2 chains, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Polygon, Fantom, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Metis.

However, LayerZero's capabilities extend beyond bridging to include cross-chain swaps, which decentralized exchanges such as Sushi, Hashflow, and WOO Network have already integrated. Additionally, money market protocols like Radiant Capital, deployed on Arbitrum and the BNB Chain, enable cross-chain borrowing for users who deposit with them.

Furthermore, LayerZero’s technology also allows for cross-chain governance, as exemplified by Pendle, a yield tokenization protocol that facilitates cross-chain voting, reward accrual, and reward boosting for users who lock the PENDLE token as vote-escrowed PENDLE (vePENDLE).

### LayerZero: A Comparative Analysis

LayerZero's approach to blockchain interoperability offers a unique and cost-effective solution with heightened security features. Unlike other solutions, LayerZero's reliance on an Oracle-Relayer pair ensures enhanced security over user transactions. Both the Oracle and Relayer have to be compromised in order for a malicious act to successfully take place, thereby largely mitigating the odds of a security breach.

The main objective of LayerZero is to create a general interoperability solution that can facilitate seamless communication and interaction between multiple blockchain networks. This is particularly important in a multi-chain future where different chains may not be able to communicate with each other. With LayerZero, all chains can connect to each other via a single interface and code, making multi-chain DApps much more convenient to use.

This greater level of interoperability is expected to have a profound impact on blockchain-powered activities such as swaps, liquidity mining, lending, and borrowing.

LayerZero has recently achieved a significant milestone by processing nearly 80 DApps and handling a transactional volume of slightly over $6 billion, resulting in securing over $7 billion in total value locked (TVL) with more than four million messages sent on their protocol as of date of writing.

The LayerZero method is a significant step forward in achieving true interoperability between different blockchain networks. It combines the strengths of both the middle chain and on-chain light node approaches while eliminating their weaknesses, and in doing so, could potentially unlock new opportunities for blockchain technology to be applied in different industries.

Dev pushed the turbo button on the B-Boat. He winced in anticipation of the boost, but the B-boat did nothing.

He pushed again and again frantically. The darn button was broken!

Dev tried to steer in zig zag to lose the white ape, but the ape kept up.

The white ape hit the turbo button and his B-Boat seemed to fly in the air. The boat was getting closer and closer.

Ah! I can’t be caught now!

Dev pushed another button on the console and loud electronic music blasted from the speakers.

What the - not that!

Dev covered his ears against the deafening music. He felt for the console and pushed another button.

There was a rumbling underneath his seat, and the ceiling above him parted. Boom! A rocket motor propelled the seat forcefully up and out of the boat, taking Dev with it. Dev launched into the sky like a kernel of popcorn and immediately came back down into the river. Sploosh!

Dev was quickly carried by the current, and he fought to swim against it. His head was pulled under and his breath wasn’t going to last much longer. Suddenly, he felt himself being caught by a net, which took him closer to the white ape’s boat.

Yow!

Dev landed on his face in the middle of the boat’s cabin. He tried to get up, but the white ape’s shiba dog bit his butt. The white ape walked towards him one step at a time.

That’s it, this is the end..

Dev braced himself for the white ape to attack…

“Chip, stop it!”

The white ape took the net off of Dev and the dog let go. Dev got up as the white ape grabbed him by the shoulders, his face beaming.

“Hi, I’m Cookie! And here is Chip, my sweet and loyal buddy,” said the ape as he nuzzled his dog. Dev shot Chip a sideways glance, and Chip gave one right back.

“Please! Let me go to the Third Continent with you!” Cookie begged. The ape looked young and eager, his twinkling eyes looking straight at Dev.

“How do you know about the Third Continent?”

“I was in your dream!”

“The dream? What are you talking about?” asked Dev.

“The voice - you heard the same one, didn’t you? ‘Come to the Third Continent. You’ll find what you are looking for.’”

“How do you know about that?”

“I was in the same dream! It was a rocky world with millions of stars above. I saw you approaching and I hid behind a big rock. You turned the whole world green and filled with life - It was amazing!”

Dev felt his head spinning. In a short span of time, he was chased by a boat, launched into the sky in an emergency seat and nearly drowned. And now, the instigator of all this has fished him into his boat and claimed to have been in his dream!

He looked back at the direction he came from, the Chocolate Banana Factory no longer visible. Where else could he go now though, but forward?

“I’ve heard that there’s deserts to the west of here - we can start there,” Cookie suggested. Dev sighed and nodded reluctantly, to which Cookie jumped up in joy.

They abandoned Dev’s now fragmented B-Boat and continued to travel in Cookie’s boat.

“So why are you looking for the Third Continent anyway?” asked Dev.

“That’s a great question! It all goes back, way back to how my mom and dad and siblings and grandma and grandpa and great grandma and great grandpa and my cousins and my nephews and nieces and Chip and well there are more.. but first I have to tell you about how my family…” Cookie rattled on nonstop while Chip barked excitedly.

Dev could not keep up and stopped listening midway. His eyes slowly closed and he dozed off.

The next day, Dev was assigned to steer the boat. He tried his best to concentrate as it was his first time steering the boat in a long time.

“I’ll cheer you on with my song!” said Cookie.

Suddenly an awful melody rang through the air. Cookie’s singing was so bad that Dev had to cover his ears. Cookie’s song immobilized Dev. Meanwhile, the boat headed straight towards a giant rock.

“Dev, look!” Cookie shouted.

The awful singing stopped and Dev whipped his head around to see the boat smash into the boulder in the river.

The B-Boat could not go forward for much longer. They pulled up to the nearest plantation and exited the boat for an emergency landing. The three ventured into the thick forest. 

Dev walked quickly, annoyed at Cookie. Now they’ve lost their only boat!

“Stop following me so closely! You’ll get us all caught!” said Dev as he walked even faster.

“Dev, I think these mushrooms are of the Paopupu variety, they are edible!” exclaimed Cookie.

He picked the mushrooms off of the tree and put them into his pocket, humming and singing off tune.

“What are you doing with those things?” demanded Dev.

“My grandma used to make them into a delicious soup. I’m going to bring them back to my family so my little siblings can have some! I hope they’re not hungry…” He was again in his own world.

Why did I let myself get into this? Dev sighed and shook his head. Was it really a good idea to agree to travel with this weirdo? Will we make it to the Third Continent without us all getting caught? I’m tired and dehydrated, I could really use some Gorilla Dew right about now..

Dev’s depressed thoughts were interrupted by Chip’s sudden barking. The shiba dog’s ears perked up and he dashed away in the direction of the thick trees.

“Chip, where are you going?”

Cookie called out for his dog, but Chip quickly disappeared into the dark forest.

Cookie ran towards the sound of Chip’s barks, forcing Dev to follow suit. Finally the thick trees cleared away to a field of grass.

Chip was barking and jumping up to a buzzing drone. Cookie ran towards Chip, with Dev behind him. Something seems odd, Dev thought. But before he had a chance to stop Cookie..

***With the increasing number of layer 1s, layer 2s and appchains it is more important now than ever that blockchains have secure, low-cost and efficient ways to communicate with one another.***

***In this article we will cover why Interoperability is important, the challenges it faces and what are the current approaches. This is Part I of a 3 part series of Interoperability where we set the scene of where we are today. Parts II & III will explore emerging Interoperability approaches that we are excited about.***

## The Proliferation of Blockchains

The first public blockchain, Bitcoin, was introduced in 2009. In the 14 years since there has been a Cambrian explosion of public blockchains with the number now totalling 201 according to DeFiLlama. While Ethereum has mostly dominated on-chain activity, accounting for ~96% Total Value Locked (TVL) in 2021; the last 2 years has seen that number fall to 59% as alternative layer 1 blockchains such as Binance Smart Chain (BSC) and Solana launched and layer 2 rollups such as Optimism, Arbitrum, zkSync Era, Starknet and Polygon zkEVM emerged amongst many others as scaling solutions for Ethereum.

According to DeFiLlama, as of writing, there are over 115 EVM based chains and 12 Ethereum rollup / L2s and the trend of activity on multiple chains is set to continue for various reasons:

- Major L2s like Polygon, Optimism & Arbitrum positioned themselves as scaling solutions for Ethereum early, raised a large amount of capital and established themselves as easy places to deploy applications cheaply (in the last year we’ve seen +2,779% growth for developer teams building on Arbitrum, +1,499% on Optimism and +116% on Polygon — albeit off a small base of ~200–400 devs)
- Alternative L1s continue to be launched to optimize for specific needs. Some chains optimize for higher throughput, speed and settlement times (e.g. Solana, BSC) and others for specific use cases like Gaming (ImmutableX), DeFi (Sei) and traditional finance (e.g. gated Avalanche subnets)
- Applications with sufficient scale and users are launching their own rollups or app chains to capture more value & manage network fees (dydx); and
- Several frameworks, SDKs, toolkits and “Rollup-as-a-service” providers have hit the market to make it easy for any project to spin-up their own rollups with minimal technical lift (e.g. Caldera, Eclipse, Dymension, Sovereign, Stackr, AltLayer, Rollkit)

We live in a multichain, multilayer world.

## **The Increasing Importance of Interoperability**

This proliferation of L1s, L2 and appchains has highlighted the importance of Interoperability — i.e. the ability and manner in which blockchains communicate with one another; to transfer assets, liquidity, messages and data between them.

Blockchain Interoperability can be broken down into three parts, as suggested by [Connext](https://blog.connext.network/the-messaging-bridge-stack-a9ae849858e0):

1.  **Transport:** where message data is passed from one chain to another
2.  **Verification:** where the correctness of the data is proven (which typically involves proving the source chain’s consensus / state); and
3.  **Execution:** where the destination chain does something with the data

The benefit of being able to move assets and liquidity between chains is straightforward — it allows users to explore and transact in new blockchains and ecosystems. They will be able to leverage the benefits of new blockchains (e.g. trading or transacting on layer 2s that have lower fees) and discover new and lucrative opportunities (e.g. accessing DeFi protocols with higher yields on other chains).

The benefit of transporting messages lies in unlocking a whole set of cross-chain use-cases without having to move their original assets. Messages sent from Chain A (the source) trigger execution of code on Chain B (the destination). For example, a dapp on Chain A could pass a message about a user’s assets or history of transactions to Chain B which then allow them to engage in activities on Chain B without having to move any assets, e.g.

- Borrowing on Chain B and using their assets on Chain A as collateral
- Participating in community benefits on a lower-cost rollup (like minting a new NFT collection, claiming tickets to events & merchandise) without having to move their NFT on Chain A
- Leveraging the decentralized ID and on-chain history they set up on one chain to engage in DeFi & access better rates on another

## **Challenges in Interoperability**

Despite the many benefits that Interoperability unlocks, it faces many technical challenges:

- Firstly, blockchains generally do not communicate well with one another: they use different consensus mechanisms, cryptography schemes and architectures. If your tokens are on Chain A, using them to buy tokens on Chain B is not a straightforward process.
- Secondly, at the Verification layer — an interoperability protocol’s reliability is only as good as the verification mechanism chosen to verify that messages passed were, indeed, legitimate and valid.
- Thirdly, having multiple places for developers to build results in applications losing composability which is a key building block in web3. This means developers are unable to easily combine components on another chain to design new applications and unlock greater possibilities for users.
- Lastly, the large number of chains means liquidity gets fragmented making participants’ capital less efficient. For example, if you have provided liquidity into a pool on Chain A to access yields, it is difficult to then take the LP token from that transaction and use it as collateral in another protocol to generate more yield. Liquidity is the lifeblood of DeFi and protocol activity — the more chains there are the more difficult it is for them all to flourish.

There are some Interoperability solutions that exist today to address some of these problems, so what is the current state of play?

## The Current State of Interoperability

Today cross-chain bridges are the main facilitator of cross-chain transactions. There are currently more than[ 110+](https://chainspot.io/) bridges with varying levels of functionality and tradeoffs across security, speed and how many blockchains it can support.

As outlined by LI.FI in their comprehensive[ Bridging 101 piece](https://blog.li.fi/bridge-aggregation-in-a-multi-chain-world-1cc9cf953422), there are several different bridge types:

- **Wrap & mint bridges** — which secure tokens on a Chain A in a multisig and mint corresponding tokens on Chain B. In theory the wrapped tokens should be the same value as the original tokens, but their value is only as good as the bridge is safe — i.e. if the bridge gets hacked, then there is nothing for the wrapped tokens to be swapped back into when a user tries to bridge from Chain B to A (Portal, Multichain)
- **Liquidity networks** — where parties provide token liquidity on either side of a chain to facilitate cross-chain swaps (e.g. Hop, Connext Amarok, Across)
- **Arbitrary Messaging Bridges** — which enable the transfer of any data (tokens, contract calls, the state of a chain), e.g. LayerZero, Axelar, Wormhole
- **Specific use case bridges** — (e.g. Stablecoin & NFT bridges) which burn stablecoins / NFTs on Chain A before releasing them to Chain B

These bridges are secured using different trust mechanisms underpinned by different trusted parties and incentives — and these choices matter (as pointed out by [Jim from Catalyst Labs](https://medium.com/coinmonks/what-i-talk-about-when-i-talk-about-bridges-429c16015774) and the Li.Fi team):

- **Team Human**  — relies on a set of entities to attest to the validity of transaction;
- **Team Economics** — relies on a set of validators with staked collateral at risk of slashing penalties to disincentivize bad behavior. This only works if the economic benefit of misbehaving is lower than the slashing penalty
- **Team Game Theory** — divides various tasks in the cross-chain process (e.g. checking transaction validity; relaying) among different parties
- **Team Math** — performs on-chain light client verifications, leveraging zero knowledge tech and succinct proofs to verify state on one chain before releasing assets on another. This minimizes human interaction and is technically complex to set up

Ultimately, trust mechanisms range from humans to humans with economic incentives to math-based verification. These approaches aren’t mutually exclusive — in some cases we’ve seen some being combined to enhance security — e.g. LayerZero’s game theory-based bridge incorporating Polyhedra (who rely on zk proofs for verification) as an oracle to its network.

How have bridges performed to date?

So far, bridges have facilitated the transfer of a large amount of capital — in January 2022 TVL in bridges peaked at $60b. With this much capital at stake bridges have become prime targets for exploits and hacks. In 2022 alone $2.5b was lost through a combination of multi-sig key compromises and smart contract vulnerabilities. A 4% annual capital loss ratio is not tenable for a financial system to thrive and attract more users.

The attacks continued in 2023 with Multichain addresses being drained for $126m (representing 50% of the Fantom bridge and 80% of the Moonriver bridge holdings) accompanied with the revelation that all this time their CEO held control of all the keys of their ‘multisig’. In the weeks after this hack, TVL on Fantom (which had a lot of assets bridged across Multichain) dropped 67%.

At the end of the day, some of the largest bridge exploits and follow-on consequences have come down to multisig vulnerabilities (Ronin $624m, Multichain $126.3m, Harmony $100m) highlighting the importance of what bridge trust mechanisms are employed.

Having a small (Harmony) or grouped (Ronin) or singular (Multichain) validator set is a key reason for some of these exploits — but attacks can come from a frightening number of vectors. In April 2022, the FBI, Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and US Treasury Department issued a joint [Cybersecurity Advisory Notice](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/cybersecurity-advisories/aa22-108a) highlighting some of the tactics used by North Korean state-sponsored Lazarus Group. They ranged from social engineering, e-mail, Telegram and CEX account phishing among others (screenshot examples in [this thread by Tayvano](https://twitter.com/tayvano_/status/1516225457640787969?s=20)).

## Where do we go from here?

It’s clear that verification mechanisms that ultimately rely on humans are easy targets — yet the need for secure, efficient Interoperability remains. So where do we go next?

We’re now seeing the emergence of trust-minimized approaches to verification — and that’s what we’re excited about:

- In Part II we’ll cover Consensus Proofs, which are used to attest to a source chain’s *latest consensus* (i.e. their state / ‘truth’ in the last few blocks) to facilitate bridging; and
- In Part III we cover Storage Proofs, which attest to *historical* transactions and data in older blocks to facilitate a wide range of cross-chain use cases.

Both approaches centre around trust-minimized verification to circumvent human reliance & fallibility and are flying the flag for the future of Interoperability. We’ll do a deep dive on them and the teams building in the space, stay tuned!

By contrast, with NFTEarth’s revenue sharing vault, there are no legal agreements, promises of payment or courts of law, and therefore there are no debts, loans or other traditional finance transactions involved.

Instead, the NFTEarth revenue sharing vault consists of software (including embedded game-theoretic incentives and assumptions) through which people can share their tokens with smart contract systems and, under normal and expected conditions and subject to various assumptions regarding the behavioral effects of incentives, probably get their tokens back eventually, plus extra tokens, most of the time or in most cases. Unlike in traditional lending, the ‘lender’s’ financial return does not depend primarily on the creditworthiness, solvency or financial skill of the ‘borrower’ or on legal nuances such as the perfection of liens or the priority of creditor claims in a bankruptcy — it depends primarily on the incentive model assumed by the software design and how reliably the software implements that model.

Thus, the transactions you can effect through NFTEarth decentralized finance systems, while superficially similar to traditional financial transactions in some ways, are in fact very different. DeFi and TradFi each have unique costs and benefits, risks and protection mechanisms. Please bear this fact in mind, and do not use NFTEarth’s revenue sharing vault or any other system described on this website without a sufficient understanding of their unique risks and how they differ from traditional financial transactions. The only way to fully understand such risks is to have a strong understanding of the relevant technical systems and the incentive design mechanisms they embody — we strongly encourage you to review NFTEarth’s technical documentation and code before use.

Lucky Lists are typically earned through **one-off engagements** as rewards for **theme-based campaigns or events**. Distributing parties include:
