As we approach the last days before the next halving event, anticipation within the crypto community is palpable.

The halving, a feature hardcoded into Bitcoin's code, represents a significant economic milestone that has historically impacted Bitcoin's price, mining ecosystem, and broader market dynamics.

This is the first time Bitcoin has broken new all-time highs before the halving, that is why it is especially important to understand the implications of the upcoming halving. In this post, we will review the upcoming halving, the expected market behaviors before and after the event, and if a potential Bitcoin supply shock is in the cards.

### **What is Bitcoin Halving?**

Approximately every four years, or after every 210,000 blocks have been mined, the reward for mining new Bitcoin blocks is cut by half. This mechanism, known as the "halving," effectively reduces the rate at which new bitcoins are created and released into circulation.

The halving is significant because it directly impacts the miners' earnings and, more broadly, the supply dynamics of Bitcoin. The upcoming halving will see the block reward decrease from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, further constricting the supply of new Bitcoins.

### **Implications of the Halving**

*Supply Shock*

The halving event is often associated with the potential for a Bitcoin supply shock. As the reward for mining decreases, the immediate effect is a reduction in the rate at which new Bitcoins are created.

After the event, miners using less energy-efficient equipment will find it hard to continue mining Bitcoin profitably, leading to a temporary decrease in the network hash rate until equilibrium is found at a new price level.

Additionally, demand is already atypically high at this stage of the 4-year cycle, with Bitcoin ETFs buying an impressive 4% of the total supply since January. If demand remains constant or continues to increase, the halving event will likely lead to a supply shock, potentially driving up the price of BTC.

*Pre and Post-Halving Price Corrections*

Historically, Bitcoin has experienced significant price volatility around halving events.

Typically, price experiences a pre-halving rally as speculators anticipate the supply shock. This surge is often followed by a pre-halving retrace, beginning roughly four weeks before the actual halving.

A re-accumulation phase tends to follow suit after the halving, where Bitcoin registers a gradual price increase. This re-accumulation phase, which usually lasts a couple of months, is right before Bitcoin begins its rocked-fueled journey to a blow-off top.

It's important to mention that past performance does not indicate future results. The multitude of factors influencing Bitcoin's price, including macroeconomic variables, regulatory changes, and ETF approval, make precise predictions challenging.

### **What to Watch Before and After the Halving**

*Before the Halving*

So far, Bitcoin is right on schedule. We are experiencing the same pre-halving price correction as in previous years, albeit less accentuated. We should expect high volatility leading up to the halving, as investors position themselves ahead of the anticipated supply shock.

*After the Halving*

So far it looks like we may have a re-accumulation period ahead of us after the halving. If that situation were to play out, Bitcoin would undergo a cool-off period with new all-time highs being delayed to the mid to long term.

However, this speculation can easily be thrown out of the window depending on the market’s immediate reaction to the halving. That is why it is crucial to keep an eye on the charts during the end of April.

In terms of the Bitcoin network itself, hashrate adjustments and miners exiting the market are to be expected. This will have a negative impact on network security and transaction processing times.

### **Building a Strategy**

The potential for increased volatility around the halving event necessitates a well-thought-out investment strategy. Risk management, long-term planning, and the ability to adjust strategies are prudent approaches.

Additionally, investors should do their best to keep up to date with the broader macroeconomic and regulatory environment, as these factors can significantly impact market dynamics beyond the halving.

The upcoming Bitcoin halving is a seminal event that underscores the unique deflationary model of Bitcoin. While the event itself is predictable, its market implications are complex and present relevant opportunities and risks for investors.

Based on [NACP](https://www.nervape.com/nacp)  (our upcoming 2D PFP platform) we created Nervos themed assets to let  users design their own Halve Nervapes and then claim a block for their  ape to live on our collaborative canvas. The event was a huge success! We didn’t think the whole  canvas would fill up, but it did in just over 52 hours! 🦍

Nervape Recap November 2023 — From Spooky Nervapes to Halve Ape Blast!

“My name is Kraft. We are going to the Chocolate Banana Factory.”

The figure loomed over them, his face covered by a face shield. Just then, they went over a bump and Dev and Cookie bounced up, nearly hitting each other’s heads.

“Ah! What on earth is going on, and who are you?!” Dev demanded.

He heard the electrical motors humming. Dev squinted his eyes and looked around. They were held in restraints on the bed of a large mecha van, quickly making its way through the banana plantation.

“There’s no time for questions.” The figure spoke calmly and turned around to tinker with a drone.

Cookie looked to the front for the driver of the truck, and saw no one. Ahead, a harvester robot stood in their direct path. They were getting closer and closer. It was about to hit them!

Cookie gasped and held Chip tightly, closing his eyes. Dev braced himself for impact. Just when they thought they were about to crash, the van made a sharp turn on its own, missing the robot by an inch.

Kraft appeared amused, a faint smirk on his face.

“My B-Van requires no driver.”

“Let us go, you creep!  At least tell us why you’re taking us to the Factory!” Dev demanded.

Kraft continued to inspect and tend to his drones, ignoring Dev.

Cookie nudged Dev to point at a flyer on Kraft’s work desk. On the flyer were the words “WANTED : Escaped criminal apes with one dog wanted for Factory 8 misconduct. Hefty Reward!” Dev, Cookie and Chip’s Factory ID photos were printed on the poster.

Dev cursed. Cookie shushed him quickly.

Cookie cleared his throat. “Mr. Kraft. I apologize for my friend’s remarks, he did not mean to insult you. We come in peace. Despite what you may have seen on the flyer, we are good natured apes, ones with a dream. And by that I mean a real dream…a destination. So it isn’t really an escape but a journey, one filled with hope and friendship. You seem like a reasonable man of craft and intellect. Perhaps you would like to join us. Have you heard of the Third Continent, Mr. Kraft?”

Dev nearly choked on his spit. What was Cookie doing!

Kraft paused his activities and turned around.

“The dream. A dragon. The monolith.” Kraft muttered, as if to himself.

“You’ve seen the dream too?” Dev interjected. 

“We’re headed to the Third Continent! You must come with us Mr. Kraft, we could really use your help. But we have to turn this car around, the desert is westwards!” Cookie’s eyes grew wide and sparkly. 

“There’s nothing in the desert.” Kraft replied.

“That dream took place there.” Dev inquired.

“My drones have searched across all of our deserts. The Third Continent is not in this world.”

“Wha..” Cookie was flabbergasted.

“This is the only world there is.” Dev stated.

“I saw her.” Kraft said abruptly.

“Who???” Cookie asked, excited.

“The girl who stole our snacks. She stole from our locations all at the same time. I investigated.” Kraft replied.

Dev and Cookie looked at each other. 

Dev finally noticed the familiar factory insignia on the pin Kraft wore. “So you’re a Factory mechanic.”

“Neat-o!” Cookie chimed in. Dev gave Cookie a side eye, but Kraft had a pleased smirk again.

“My drones almost caught her, but she opened a portal and got away. Caught a glimpse of the chocolate bananas where she was headed.”

“A portal. Nonsense.” Dev rolled his eyes.

“I’ve never known anyone that could open a portal! If she could use it to travel between spaces, it definitely makes sense that she’s from another world!” mused Cookie.

“Outside of this world, there must exist technologies and gadgets far greater than anything we can imagine. In the Third Continent, I’ll build even more advanced, complex machines.”  Kraft’s steely eyes softened slightly as he said this; a statement from within.

“And I’ll be able to provide a better future for my family,” Cookie smiled.

“Is all of your family in Factory 8?” asked Dev.

“No, they are all scattered in other factories, even my little siblings. They are just kids. Every day is the same old grind for them,” said Cookie.

“Working nonstop, with no time to live or dream,” finished Dev.

“Yes! Is this all there is to it? I’ve wondered for the longest time. I want to save them and provide a better future for them.” 

There was a silent moment, as the three continued to be rocked lightly by the van.

Dev looked at his hands, recalling the inexplicable sensation of fulfillment.

He looked at Kraft, determined. “I know my way around Factory 8 inside and out, all the hidden pathways, escape routes, surveillance areas and control room. That’s how I got out. Do you really think you could get around that place without knowing this?”

Kraft fell silent for a moment. After some time, he turned his back on Dev and Cookie.

”Ok. We will work together.”

Dev held out his arms, expecting Kraft to release him.

Kraft shook his head.

“I will come back for you.”

“What?”

“But first, I must have you both captured.” Kraft replied.

Dev and Cookie could now see the Chocolate Banana Factory just a few miles ahead, quickly approaching.

Dev felt alarmed. No, not this place again, after all he did to get away!

“This is insane! LET ME GO!” 

“Dev, no!” Cookie called out.

Dev lashed out with all his might, breaking free from his leg restraints. He charged towards Kraft in a wild frenzy but tumbled as he stepped on the drone on the floor that Kraft was fixing. He did a barrel roll and nearly fell off the bed of the truck.

Kraft looked somber for a brief second, but quickly picked up his controller. His other drone promptly zapped Dev, Cookie and Chip yet again. 

The three fell unconscious.

…

Waking up still feeling small pulses of electricity yet again, this time with a wet sensation on the face and a hot, bad smell..

The interrogator’s dog dribbled on Dev’s cheek, leaving large globs of mucus-like saliva. Dev jolted up and pushed the creature away. Eughhh, hot drool!

Cookie and Chip awoke at the same time from the Warrior’s growl that shook the cell.

“Wake up! Wake up!” The Warrior ape’s large and stubby hands smacked Cookie and Chip in the face repeatedly.

The three awoke to find themselves in a large, cold gray cell in Factory 8. Kraft was nowhere to be seen, they were in restraints yet again, and now a gargantuan Warrior ape wearing a scouter towered nearby. In front of them, a short and stern looking ape with a helmet and a badge crossed his arms, while his similarly helmet wearing dog sat beside him, panting.

He marched towards Dev and Cookie as his dog followed.

“Tell me - was it you numb knuckle apes that caused the explosion?” The ape demanded.

A brief pause. “No..” Dev answered. The dog studied Dev, then barked.

“Lies!” The Warrior’s giant hand clutched Dev by the nape to lift him up in a single swoop. He tightened his grip and Dev could barely breathe.

“Okay, okay! Yes, it was me!” He sputtered. The interrogator glanced at the dog, who remained silent. The Warrior let go of Dev, who landed on the ground, coughing.

The interrogator ape locked eyes with Cookie. “Were you an accomplice?”

“No.” Cookie answered. The dog let out a sharp huff through its snout but did not bark.

“Why then, did you run away?”

Cookie was silent.

“I…wanted to take my dog for a walk.”

The interrogator dog’s ears perked up and its tail momentarily wagged at the last word, but stopped as soon as his owner threw down a death stare.

The dog immediately reverted back into work mode and barked loudly. Without missing a beat, the Warrior punched a hole in the wall next to Cookie.

“Wah!! No violence please! Ok..I had a dream..” Cookie started, awkwardly.

“This isn’t the time for a speech! Answer my question!” The interrogator ape was inches away from Cookie’s face, spitting in rage.

Chip barked at the ape and the Warrior leaned back, ready to slug the shiba into oblivion.

“Don’t hurt him! He’s just hungry, he hasn’t eaten in so long. Here…will you please just give him the mushroom in my pocket..” Cookie pleaded.

The interrogator ape laughed a deep belly laugh and walked over to Cookie, reaching into his pocket and grabbing the mushroom with his hands.

“Gahaha! You think you’re in a place to ask favors?!” he snarled and handed the mushroom to the Warrior. The Warrior put the mushroom up to his face and sniffed. And sniffed.

Suddenly, the most entranced expression filled the Warrior’s face. Seeing this, the interrogator marched over and also took a whiff.

“Hea..heavenly smell! Like the ripest strawberry and cinnamon bun dancing on a cloud of cotton candy..”

The dog also inhaled deeply, drooling and taking in as much of the delicious scent as it could. All 3 of them crowded near the mushroom like bees to a flower.

“No, wait!”

Cookie called out, but it was too late. The three of them bit into the mushroom with great vigor and swallowed it.

As soon as they tore into the flesh of the sweet smelling mushroom, they realized something was amiss. The interrogator grimaced. The Warrior’s gargantuan body froze up. The dog gagged. A bitter, paralyzing liquid filled their mouths and down their throats, quickly spreading through their limbs.

The interrogator tried to yell for his dog and the Warrior to attack Dev and Cookie but he could not do so. The Paopupu mushroom turned their body into jello and the interrogator, his dog, and the Warrior all tumbled to the floor, paralyzed.

“I was gonna say, there’s a right way to eat these..” Cookie shrugged as he looked on at the immobilized, twitching interrogator ape, now lying next to Chip.

“Chip, get us those keys, please!” Cookie called out cheerfully, and Chip grabbed the keys from the paralyzed Warrior with his jaws and unlocked Cookie’s restraints nearby.

“Very good, Chip!” Cookie took the key from Chip and freed Dev.

“Ok, that was insane..what was that thing?” asked Dev.

“The Paopupu mushroom is found growing in deep forests with minimal sunlight. The mushroom emits a tantalizing sweet smell, but it unleashes an unbelievably bitter taste and paralyzing spores if it is not eaten correctly. The correct way to eat it is quite simple, backwards, or stem first!” Cookie exclaimed proudly.

“Alright.. so this freaky poison mushroom has saved us, but who knows when the others will show up. Let’s get out of this factory, and fast.” Dev started towards the stairs.

Cookie grabbed his wrist. “No Dev, we should look for Kraft! He’s going to come back for us, remember? We have to find the girl with him.”

“Do you still believe that guy? He was probably just lying. He captured us and zapped us, not once but twice! How naive can you be! This is our only chance to leave, and you want to stay?”

“Kraft saw the dream too, Dev! We’re all on this journey together. He’s our friend and he’s gonna return for us! We have to find him!”

“No. We got caught up with this guy and look what happened. Back at the very place I nearly died trying to get out of. I know now I can only trust myself. I’m getting out of here and finding the Third Continent, and if I have to do it alone, so be it.”

Dev grabbed the Warrior’s scouter and his laptop and pushed Cookie aside. He started quickly up the stairs, not turning back.

The two apes that once joined together for the same dream, separated abruptly as their desires divulged…

### Network Security

Sequencers are at the core of a Layer 2 network, a centralized sequencer could have a negative impact, such as censoring user transactions, creating a single point of failure, and creating harmful MEVs. Cyber L2 utilizes EigenLayer’s [Actively Validated Services](https://docs.eigenlayer.xyz/eigenlayer/overview/key-terms) (AVS) to build up the fundamental decentralized infrastructures such as sequencer, verifier, and CyberDB. Staked CYBER and restaked ETH are utilized as delegations to different AVS operators running these infrastructures, and a slashing mechanism is implemented to ensure operational integrity, optimize performance and maximize network security.

Cookie reached down to gingerly lift the helmet off of the Interrogator’s dog and put it on Chip’s head. He quickly buttoned up the Interrogator’s jacket which he also took and put on his cap. An official Factory 8 interrogator badge shined on the jacket. Nearby, the Interrogator, his dog, and the Warrior lay sprawled out on the floor, mumbling in his sleep.

“Let’s go Chip!” said Cookie. Now disguised, the two started up the stairs. Cookie frowned thinking of his interaction with Dev, but he tried to brush off his sadness. He quickened his pace climbing up the stairs.

The factory is eerily empty and quiet. As they neared the top of the stairs, Cookie heard activity above, many voices, rushed footsteps and booming laughter. Cookie and Chip turned the corner into the hallway leading to the banquet hall. 

“Excuse me sir,” said two servers who pushed a large cart of silver platters, rushing to get through.

Cookie and Chip were worried they would be recognized for a second, but the busy servers seemed to take no notice. Cookie and Chip stood to the side of the room, blending in with the other staff and guards.

Cookie surveyed the ornately decorated banquet hall bustling with guests. Servers rushed about to and fro from the hall to the kitchen with carts.

At the long dining table sat many formally dressed apes engaged in conversation. These were the 13 leaders of the Banana Factory branches. The CEO of the Factories sat at the head of the table on an ornate throne of a chair, which barely held his large mass. Old and gluttonous, he looked bored as he glanced at the empty plates, his thick white mustache against a stubby finger. 

The Factory 8 Boss and Factory 6 Boss sat near the CEO.

“...and this year, Factory 8 has achieved the highest sales with our Chocolate Bananas. Has Factory 6 been faring this well?” The Factory 8 Boss gloated. 

“Of course - our Banana Fragrance has been a top item through all the seasons. A little bird told me about some Factory 8 worker runaways and a dangerous explosion recently?” replied the Factory 6 Boss while looking askance at the Factory 8 Boss.

The Factory 8 Boss looked annoyed at this mention.

“Perhaps some better management is in order..” commented the Factory 6 Boss.

“Stop chatting nonsense and start the banquet,” the CEO growled, cutting their conversation short.

The Factory 8 Boss quickly rose from his seat and tapped his champagne glass with a fork. 

“Ladies and gentlemen, we at Factory 8, the Chocolate Banana Factory, are delighted to host tonight’s annual Banquet to celebrate our yearly accomplishments. Please be assured that we will be providing a magnificent feast with utmost hospitality. A toast to our glimmering future, power and prosperity!” 

The servers and guards cheered in unison and raised their glasses in a loud toast. 

As the apes lifted their steel cloches in unison, revealing a decadent plate of banana sweets. 

The apes oohed and ahhed at the finely crafted banana cream puffs, banana shortcakes and banana macarons that adorned their plate. The Boss ape smiled smugly.

As the ape Bosses raised their dessert forks, a shining light appeared and a ring appeared on the surface of one ape’s table. Sparks flew from the ring, and when the ape looked down quizzically, suddenly a small hand shot up from within the swirling small ring.

To the Boss apes’ horror, the hand quickly snatched up the plates one by one at lightning speed, quickly disappearing into the circle of light once snatching each ape Boss’ plate of food. Guards ran to catch this mystery hand but it disappeared back into the ring before they reached it.

The servers jumped back in shock and the guards collided against each other, failing to catch the mystery food snatcher!

Cookie was stunned at the sight as well, but quickly grew excited. This must be the magic Kraft talked about!

Soon, there was not a single plate left on the banquet table. The room erupted in shock at this apparition that had suddenly stolen all of their food! 

The Boss apes looked bewildered, then uncomfortable as though they were trying to hide something. 

“Ladies and Gentlemen, please do not be alarmed, that was a performance to start our evening. We will have our plates restored shortly,” stated the Factory 8 Boss.

“What the hell is going on?” the CEO barked angrily.

The Factory 8 Boss flinched as he looked to the CEO. 

“Sir, we will investigate right away. All will be resolved.”

“And the food?”

“We’ve prepared a special unreleased dessert we’d like to present at the end of this feast, an exquisite dessert made of the finest ingredients by our top Factory 8 chefs. The one and only Banana Moon!” The Factory 8 Boss exclaimed.

The mention of this dessert seemed to appease the CEO slightly.

Just then, a server rushed to the Factory 8 Boss, looking frantic. 

“Sir, there is nothing left in the kitchen. We’ve been wiped out,” the server whispered.

The Boss’ expression of feigned calm left his face instantly.

“I don’t know what on earth is going on here, but tell the Warriors to gather all of the guards and servers, catch this thief immediately!” He demanded in a harsh whisper. The server nodded and took off.

Amongst the chaos, one server pushing a cart alone in the hallway caught Cookie’s eye. He looked strangely familiar…

“Kraft??” Cookie whispered excitedly.

Kraft spun around.

“Cookie. I haven’t come back for you.”

“We escaped! Kraft! Why are you dressed as a server?”

“I’m working,” said Kraft. His drone standing next to him was also wearing a server uniform.

“But why?” asked Cookie.

“I turned you in so I could work here and find the girl,” said Kraft. He looked at Cookie and Chip and noticed Dev was nowhere to be seen. “Your friend? ”

“He left on his own. I hope he gets out of here safely.” Cookie stated somberly, but quickly changed the topic. “That hand though! Did you see it too? What was that??”

“The hand came through a portal. It belongs to the girl we’re looking for” said Kraft.

“Oh my goodness, so she really is here! We’ve got to find her!” Cookie exclaimed.

“Unfortunately, there’s no clues as to where she is.”

“It looks like she has a sweet tooth. If we have dessert on us, maybe she’ll come back for more,” suggested Cookie.

“All the desserts are depleted…no, there’s one left.”

Cookie and Kraft looked at each other and nodded.

“The Banana Moon,” they stated in unison.

“It must be hidden in the Boss’s office on the top floor somewhere. He wouldn’t let it sit in the open..”

“Lead the way.”

After a series of winding staircases, hallways, corridors, and forks after forks - they arrived at the tall iron doors of the Boss’s office. A guard stood watch beside it. The guard glanced at Cookie’s interrogator badge on his jacket. 

“I’m here to retrieve the Banana Moon for the CEO.” Cookie stated firmly, and the guard nodded as he stepped aside for them to enter.

Entering the room, they saw that there was no one inside. The garish office was filled with over the top royal decor. A banana wine collection, cigars, and a large fireplace decked the room. A peculiar golden statue was next to the Boss’ desk. 

“Is this…the CEO?” Cookie mused.

The golden statue was of the CEO looking regal with a crown, a scepter and the biggest mustache ever.

“It doesn’t look like there’s any desserts here…just a bunch of stuff!” Cookie said as he peered inside the wine cabinet. Chip sniffed the Boss’ cigar collection.

“These bookshelves have been moved,” said Kraft, pointing to markings on the wall.

“There must be a switch,” he stated, and began to check all of the pieces in the office one by one.

Cookie and Kraft scoured the room to no avail. They poked and prodded. Cookie stuck his head out from inside the fireplace, coughing from the soot, and saw Kraft approaching the bizarre golden statue. 

Kraft observed the statue keenly.

“Be careful Kraft..I think that’s something important..” Cookie advised.

Suddenly, Kraft reached over and with both hands tugged on the CEO statue’s mustache.

“Kraft!” Cookie yelled, alarmed.

A soft rumbling sound. Chip jumped back from the bookshelf, which moved to the side to reveal a hidden staircase. 

“Let’s go.” Kraft motioned for Cookie and Chip to follow. 

The three quickly traveled down the dark stairway and a narrow corridor with a small door at the end. Kraft pushed the door with some force. A secret walk in fridge!

Cold air blew in their faces as they pushed through the door. The fridge was massive enough for all three of them to walk around freely. On the shelves, there were banana sweets of all shapes and sizes. Banana rolls, banana tiramisu, banana truffles.. All displayed prominently on black shelves and lit up by a stylish light. 

At the end of the fridge was one dessert that was especially decadent, perched on a golden dessert stand. A banana crescent moon atop a crystal glazed chocolate mousse filled with caramel and banana custard. A shimmering ribbon of finely spun diamond sugar danced around the moon. 

Cookie was mesmerized by this gem-like dessert. He had never seen such extravagance like what was displayed at the banquet, and now this dazzling dessert displayed on a stand of real gold. He thought of his small brothers and sisters who would die to try these sweets, but never could with what little they earn from the factories. He saw some banana jellybeans and put a handful in his pocket for his siblings.

Cookie was soon brought to his senses by Kraft, who urged him to pick up the dessert. Cookie lifted the golden dessert stand off of the shelf and hurried out of the fridge with Kraft and Chip. 

The three of them ascended up the dark staircase and out into the Boss’ office. No one was there, they were in the clear. They rushed out the room and quickly closed the iron doors. They turned around and ran straight into the Factory 8 Boss.

The Boss cursed and rubbed his face, then realized what Cookie held in his hands. 

“My Banana Moon!” 

“We’re headed to present it to the CEO, just like you wanted..?” Cookie stuttered.

“I wouldn’t send anyone. Hold on…you’re the runaway white ape!”

“Hand that over right now!”

“Run!” Cookie yelled and took off running with the Banana Moon, Chip and Kraft following closely behind him.

They ran down the corridor and turned a corner. The Boss and his guard were soon catching up.

The Boss sped up to try and catch Cookie. Kraft controlled his drone and attempted to zap the Boss, but the guard swatted the drone away. Kraft jumped to barely catch his falling drone and kept running.

Just when he thought he was going to be caught, a portal opened up and a small hand snatched the Banana Moon.

Cookie grabbed onto the arm and yelled for Kraft and Chip to hold on. They climbed into the portal moments before the portal disappeared. The Boss could not stop running and slammed into the wall ahead, breaking his tooth.

Cookie, Kraft and Chip were flung into the control room as the portal closed before them.

“Ow…what the heck!” A small girl ape wearing an oversized cap and leather skirt rubbed her back. Tattoos of donuts, candy and sweets adorned her arms and a plain wooden yo-yo dangled from her skirt belt loop.

Cookie and Kraft looked around the dark room lit by hundreds of glowing surveillance monitor screens. They were thrust into the control room of the Factory, which was now littered with plates, crumbs, and an assortment of banana desserts, some half eaten. Cookie held onto the Banana Moon tightly.

Cookie and Kraft looked at each other and knew this was the girl.

“Who are you? Was that portal travel magic? Is there really another world?” Cookie asked in succession.

He looked around and saw that there was no one else in the room besides them.

“Are we safe?” Cookie whispered. Kraft glanced at the surveillance monitors. The Boss was in a frenzy, ordering the guards to find the escaped apes immediately!

“There’s no one else here, I’ve sent the others away, they were being annoying,” said the girl.

“You are just a little girl.” said Kraft dryly while fixing his drone.

The girl stood up angrily and put her hands on her waist.

“I had a mid-child life crisis, I’m not just a little girl!” She glared at Cookie. “I’m Delphi the Summoner. Give me that dessert or I’ll send you all to a place that’s much less sweet. 

“You take us to the Third Continent, and we give you this Banana Moon,” said Kraft.

Delphi contemplated this offer and twirled the rim of her cap.

# Intro

Overlay Protocol is a decentralized platform built on Ethereum, and offers users the ability to build positions on a market or data stream without traditional counterparties.

Overlay aims to offer several types of markets, based on price data feeds and non-manipulable & non-predictable data feeds. These include:

# OVL (token)

OVL is the proposed native token of Overlay Protocol. It is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum Mainnet. # Governance

As of today, Overlay Protocol is governed by Planck Cat DAO, a DAO for Overlay contributors to participate in the protocol governance via PlanckCat (PCD) NFT’s. Discussions are currently being had about OVL taking the place of governance. These discussions will be had in the appropriate channels on Discord and Forum.

1 PCD NFT equals one vote and PCD NFT holders can vote for governance proposals on [Snapshot](https://snapshot.org/#/planckcatdao.eth). Moreover, any PCD NFT holder can start a discussion on both [Overlay Discord](http://discord.gg/m2U5vSr4gD) and/or the [Forum](https://gov.overlay.market/), and then after a temperature check, can open a governance proposal on Snapshot.

PlanckCat DAO can and will decide on what markets will be listed or delisted on the protocol, as well as set protocol risk parameters which will dictate the experience for all users.

Non-PCD NFT holders can still get involved with discussions on Discord and the Governance Forum.

If community members want to actively participate in governance,they must earn an NFT by contributing to Overlay Protocol. Participation is judged by community members, and contributors are rewarded with Cred. As of today, community members must collect 1000 Cred to claim one PCD NFT. The soft cap supply of the PCD NFT is currently set to 500. More NFT’s can be minted on a one off basis once the 500 limit has been set.

# My opinion

There are a lot of defies on the market today, but I like this project because it has a warm community. I took part in a trading tournament and I can say that for the casual trader this platform is a real godsend. I even managed to trade more than 30% PNL in 2 weeks. In [Part I](https://link3.to/superscrypt/post/da13cc67d3cb9f459cd4fef6796f2610dbd88f03df88b8b6780638f20570ebec) we covered the concept of blockchain interoperability and how it will only increase in importance as alternative L1s, L2s and appchains emerge. The large amount of capital moved on bridges makes them attractive targets for hackers and in 2022 we saw $2.5b lost to multisig and smart contract vulnerabilities. Of all exploits that occurred that year, a staggering[ 69% were related to bridges](https://blog.chainalysis.com/reports/cross-chain-bridge-hacks-2022/).

At the heart of these losses were failures at **Verification** step of bridging, where the trust mechanism used to verify transaction validity was underpinned by humans & multisigs:

- Ronin’s bridge was secured by a 5 of 9 multisig. 4 validators were operated by one party and compromised in one go, making the 5th an easy trigger 
- Harmony Bridge was secured by a 2 of 5 multisig which was compromised through unknown methods, though social engineering was suspected
- Multichain’s private keys were a ‘multisig’ effectively held by one person

Given these vulnerabilities, the **Verification** step in the bridging process is much better served by trust-minimized methods that rely on code and math.

This is where **Consensus Proofs** come in as a potential solution. The approach relies on a prover **verifying blockchain consensus** of the source chain and using zero knowledge proofs to attest to validity of a transaction before releasing funds to a destination.

That’s a lot to unpack, so let’s first define what we mean by *verifying blockchain consensus*.

**Verifying the source blockchain’s state / ‘consensus’**

At their core, blockchains are ledgers that record transactions between accounts maintained by nodes that do not trust each other. Since there are many nodes validating a blockchain network, agreement must be reached amongst these validators on which block is the most recently added one, i.e. they must reach **‘consensus’** on the latest state.

Reliably verifying source chain consensus on the destination chain is key to bridging because if you can **verify** the latest block of the source chain in a trust-minimized manner, you determine the latest ‘truth’ and then have the comfort to **execute** a corresponding action on the destination chain.

For bridging, the protocol needs to determine that a ‘deposit’ transaction on the source chain was validly made. In practice this involves verifying two things:

- ***Step 1. Verifying blockchain consensus***, i.e. that the block we’re querying is a valid part of the source chain’s world state; and
- ***Step 2. Check that the specific transaction***, i.e. the  ‘deposit’ transaction is included in the block (this can be proven with a [Merkle Inclusion proof](https://ethereum.org/en/developers/tutorials/merkle-proofs-for-offline-data-integrity/))

Upon verification of both, the destination chain can release assets to the user.

Voila, assets bridged.

In theory this sounds simple, but the tricky part is step 1: it is not so easy for a smart contract on one chain to verify the consensus of another (typically Ethereum as the source chain).

**Current challenges with verifying consensus for bridging**

The first challenge to point out is that different blockchains have different consensus mechanisms and proving consensus on each source chain requires very specific engineering work to set up. This means the verifying consensus step will need to be customized for each source chain. For now let’s focus on proving Ethereum consensus given it has the lion’s share of TVL and is the typical L1 that users bridge from.

Ethereum has a large validator set of 700,000+ out of which more than 21,000 validators vote on a block in a slot. To achieve finality, a block should get votes from the ⅔ of the validator set which is roughly equivalent to 450,000 validator votes. Verifying full consensus would mean checking the validity of 450,000 signatures.

A less cumbersome method of checking Ethereum’s consensus involves the ‘light client protocol’. This uses a sync committee (512 validators selected at random every 27.3 hours) to attest that the latest block proposed is valid. Here, verifying consensus means checking the validity of 512 aggregated signatures.

In a bridging context, a smart contract on the destination chain can use the light client protocol and act as an on-chain ‘light client’ to verify the latest state of the source chain and ensure a ‘deposit’ was made. If satisfied, the smart contract releases funds on the destination chain.

This approach is not very practical because verifying 512 aggregated signatures directly in a smart contract on-chain is prohibitively costly without pre-compiles given Ethereum validators use[ BLS signatures](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLS_digital_signature).

The key to making this possible then, is taking the verification step off-chain...

… and this is where **Consensus Proofs** come in.

### **The Solution: Consensus Proofs of the sync committee signatures**

Zero knowledge proofs have emerged as a viable solution to help blockchains take costly computations off-chain and verify the result on-chain. This allows a bridging smart contract on the destination chain to move costly computations (like validating source chain consensus) to an off-chain zero knowledge prover:

- The prover will verify the signature and generate a **Consensus Proof** - i.e. a succinct zero-knowledge proof that attests that the block is the next valid block, as it has received ⅔ of sync committee attestations. This proof verifies the source blockchain’s consensus (***Step 1.** from above*).
- Once the validity of a block is proven, we can prove that a transaction was part of this block (***Step 2.** from above*) using Merkle inclusion proofs. (Alternatively, a zero-knowledge proof can be generated off-chain and verified by a smart contract on the destination chain for the same purpose).

After these two steps, the destination smart contract can safely release funds on the destination chain.

Using Consensus Proofs to verify source blockchain state is an important step towards trust-minimized bridging, but relying on the light client protocol & 512 validators has some limitations (highlighted in the table below).

As such, some teams are working on proving *full* ethereum consensus, which is a complex task and would involve verifying 450,000 signatures at the time of writing. Doing so in a zero knowledge circuit is no mean feat - but teams like [Polyhedra Network](https://polyhedra.network/) and [Succinct](https://blog.succinct.xyz/blog/sync-committee) have committed to achieving this.

Polyhedra Network recently [announced](https://polyhedra.medium.com/proving-full-node-of-ethereum-in-zk-c7ffaaa688dd) that they managed to verify 21,000 validator signatures that sign a block at a given slot in ZK and are working toward verifying all 450,000 signatures. More details on their approach and proving system can be found in their zkBridge [paper](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3548606.3560652).

Once we can verify full Ethereum consensus in zero-knowledge, verifying consensus of other chains with smaller validator sets in zero-knowledge should be relatively straightforward.

### **Risks of using zero knowledge proofs**

While zero knowledge tech & Consensus Proofs solve for human fallibility, the discussion would be incomplete without acknowledging some of the risks that arise with using them in bridging.

Zero-knowledge technology is rapidly changing, as novel algorithms and systems continue to emerge. Some of these implementations are unaudited and could contain vulnerabilities, making them susceptible to potential exploits when significant incentives arise. Furthermore, even after audits, such complex cryptographic systems may contain undiscovered attack vectors which will be identified and rectified over time, to reach a matured, battle-hardened state.

Moreover, it remains to be seen at what transaction volume does the expense of generating and verifying zero-knowledge proofs become sufficiently amortized to be deemed cost-effective.

### **The teams building**

To conclude, we’ll highlight some of the players building solutions in this space. While they have slightly differing approaches and go-to-markets they are pushing the limits of what zk-based bridging can do and heralding the emergence of trust-minimized interoperability.

Among them we have:

- [Polyhedra Network](https://polyhedra.network/) who have been designing and implementing the [zkBridge](https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.00264) protocol, and can be used to attest to another chain’s state. zkBridge currently supports bridging across more than 20 L1s and L2s, including Ethereum, Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum. Polyhedra Network has integrated both sync committee based proofs and full consensus based proofs with LayerZero to facilitate zk-based bridging. 

- [Succinct Labs](https://www.succinct.xyz/) who have been developing zk-based light clients to attest to Ethereum’s state and facilitate bridging between Gnosis Chain & Ethereum as source chains and Gnosis, Arbitrum, Avax, Binance Smart Chain, Optimism and Polygon as destination chains

- [Polymer Labs](https://www.polymerlabs.org/) aims to extend IBC connectivity across different chains through Polymer Hub, which enforces the IBC transport or TAO semantics across connected chains. Polymer Hub also enables a mesh interoperability model which has improved scaling properties compared to p2p or hub and spoke models

- [Electron Labs](https://electronlabs.org/) who is focused on building bridging approaches between Ethereum and the Cosmos ecosystem

- [Lagrange Labs](https://lagrange-labs.gitbook.io/lagrange-labs/overview/what-is-the-lagrange-protocol) who will use their own state committees (that are secured by Eigenlayer re-staking) to attest to the state of blockchains. They are targeting optimistic L2s (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) and major L1s as their go-to-market

**Conclusion**

Interoperability is a core part of blockchain infrastructure. The first innings of bridging saw trust mechanisms underpinned by multisigs and compromised by reliance on humans. We’re now starting to move into the realm of bridges being secured by cryptography and math made feasible by the application of zero-knowledge proofs in the context of bridging.

In this part we covered how Consensus Proofs help solve for bridging by checking the latest finalized source blockchain consensus.

This technology, however, can be extended further to check **historical** consensus which enables more flexible cross-chain use cases beyond just bridging at the moment. And that is what we’ll explore in Part III of our series on Interoperability: Storage Proofs & the use cases they unlock.
