You've probably encountered quite a bit of chatter about danksharding, but what exactly is it?

Let's explore the Ethereum's scalability endgame, and try to simplify it as much as possible.

## Sharding 1.0

Ethereum's initial scalability approach was via sharding (let's call it sharding 1.0), **effectively transforming Ethereum into 64 parallel-processing shards, much akin to 64 chains executing blocks simultaneously**.

However, this design brought in unwanted complexities—each of the 64 shard blocks had individual proposers and committees cycling through the validator set, resulting in an inferior user experience and potential security vulnerabilities.

## Problems for rollup-centric roadmap

With the advent of L2 solutions, Ethereum **shifted towards a rollup-centric roadmap**. This means they plan to delegate transaction ("txn" for brevity) and smart contract execution to L2s, while focusing on ensuring L2 data availability on L1.

This brings up a few additional queries - at present, L2 data is posted on L1 through *calldata* which **incur significant gas cost**, as *calldata* is processed by all Ethereum nodes and it stays on the chain perpetually.

So, what are we looking for?

We aim to **decrease the gas cost of posting data on L1, and simplify the validation process for validators as much as possible** in order to achieve greater decentralization.

Specifically, we want to enable validators to (1) confirm that L2 data are made available on L1, (2) ascertain that data availability sampling are done correctly, (3) do (1) & (2) without having to download data, and (4) only focus on validating instead of building blocks.

## Danksharding

Danksharding will address these aspects in several ways:

- Data blob (reduces L2 data posting cost)
- Data availability sampling (ensures data was made available)
- KZG commitment (ensures data were properly made available)
- Proposer-builder separation (ensures validators only focus on validation instead of having to build blocks, which is a expensive computational work)

### Data blob

Instead of posting L2 transactions to L1 via calldata, **we're introducing a new transaction type termed "data blob"** to house this data. The revamped lifecycle appears like this:

- Let's just focus on the red box
- Once L2 sequencers processed the txns, they post the blob txn (the yellow box, which includes a commitment to the blob) along with the data blob (the blue box, encompassing the L2 transaction data) to L1 txn pool
- L1 execute the txn

- Proposers view the txns and broadcast them. But instead of broadcasting the whole thing, blob txns will be included in the execution payload that will be processed in the execution layer, whereas the blobs will ONLY be maintained on the consensus layer to cut costs.

### Data availability sampling ("DAS")

We aim to guarantee that validators can easily verify data availability without the need to download the data. This is where DAS comes into play. While the exact cryptographic process can get quite complex, let's try to simplify it.

First off, it's crucial to understand that the data is interpreted as a polynomial (we know it sounds scary, but we’ll make it simple).

Just remember this - for any polynomial with a degree 'd', we can reconstruct the polynomial with 'd+1' coordinates that lie on this polynomial.

Take this polynomial as an example, which is degree 3 (2x^3).

Now, suppose anyone receive a data set of -5, 1, 29, and 91.

- We can reconstruct the previous polynomial with these 4 coordinates.
- Knowing the polynomial, we use something called Reed-Solomon code (which is a type of erasure code, you don’t have to understand this) to expand 4 more coordinates.
- We now have 8 coordinates on the polynomial.
- Given that it's a polynomial of degree 3, we only need 4 coordinates to reconstruct the polynomial.
- As we have 8 coordinates, we can ensure data reconstruction as long as 50% (4/8) of the data is available.

Applying this concept back to Ethereum DAS:

For data blob we receive, we map them to a polynomial and apply the erasure code to expand it by 2x.

**We then just need to ensure that 50% of the data is available** for us to reconstruct the entire block.

> DAS key takeaway - DAS allows validators to verify that the erasure-coded data was made available.

### KZG commitment

Now that we have the erasure-coded data, the question is, how can we verify that the data were correctly erasure coded? That's where the KZG commitments come into play.

Let’s continue to use the example polynomial.

- To confirm that the data is erasure coded correctly, the prover creates a commitment A to the polynomial.
- The prover then calculates a proof B for the evaluation of x = 1, i.e., F(1) = -5.

Given commitment A, proof B, the position x=1 and the evaluation F(1) = -5, any verifier can affirm that the evaluation of x = 1 is indeed correctly aligned with the committed polynomial.

> KZG commitment key takeaway - KZG commitment serves as a proof that the original data was accurately extended and committed for DAS.

But in reality, a single Ethereum block will use a 2-dimensional KZG scheme which includes MANY KZG commitments, instead of just one.

Danksharding aims to support max of 256 data blobs per block, each of which requires a commitment.

We'll again use the Reed-Solomon code (introduced in DAS), to extend these 256 commitments to 512 commitments, all of which lie on the same polynomial.

But there's an issue.

Even though we only need 50% availability of any given row or column to reconstruct that entire row or column, what if something like the below chart happens - where the missing data of the red box is slightly ≥25%? For any row or column that involves the lower right extension, we have <50% of the data, which means we can't reconstruct it.

Therefore, **in practice, we need at least 75% of the data to be available** (as opposed to the 50% mentioned earlier in the DAS section).

### Proposer-builder separation

The danksharding design, while advantageous in many ways, presents a unique challenge due to its increased block building requirements.

- Maximum block sizes for danksharding could reach up to 32 MB, and computing KZG commitments for such a data volume in ~1s necessitates a CPU with 32-64 cores.
- Transmitting 64 MB of data within the builder's deadline would demand at least 2.5 GBit bandwidth.

**Such constraints make it challenging for home-based stakers to construct a block in danksharding**. They're required to invest in more robust hardware, a factor that could harm decentralization.

To mitigate this, we need specialized "builders".

Builders handle computationally intense work - build blocks for the block proposers to broadcast, and the process ensures that anyone can validate the blobs efficiently and promptly.

## The comparison - Sharding 1.0 vs danksharding

To illustrate the enhanced efficiency of danksharding compared to sharding 1.0, let's reference Delphi Digital 's calculations of bandwidth requirements for data availability sampling:

Sharding 1.0, which utilizes 1D KZG commitment, required only 30 samples but across 64 shards. Each sample is 512 B (bytes), thus:

(512 B x 64 shards x 30 samples) / 16 seconds = 60 KB/s bandwidth

On the other hand, danksharding, which employs 2D KZG commitment, will need 75 samples, albeit for only one block at a time:

(512 B x 1 block x 75 samples) / 16 seconds = 2.5 KB/s bandwidth

Comparatively, danksharding, at 2.5 KB/s, **has essentially reduced the bandwidth requirement by an impressive 96% compared to sharding 1.0**, which requires 60 KB/s!

## Final words

While we call it dank"sharding", the data is not exactly "sharded". The only reason we call it "sharding" is because validators don't have to download all of the data.

Danksharding is still a few years a way, and we'll see proto-danksharding (EIP-4844) first.

At Footprint Analytics, we’ve seen the challenges and opportunities in Web3 marketing first-hand and have realized that while some principles overlap with marketing in other industries, Web3 marketing is unique.

All marketing begins with data — the ability to track, research, and segment your customers, then launch measurable campaigns. On the one hand, Web3 marketers lack highly sophisticated tools like Facebook’s advertising suite and traditional CDPs. On the other, they have on-chain data — an open database of all transactions on the ledger showing how people interact with your project and protocol and your competitors.

Some traditional tactics and channels don’t work at all for Web3 marketing as of 2023:

*   Social media platform ads: Many platforms, like Facebook and TokTok, ban ads related to NFTs and crypto
*   TV ads: Same problem as above, especially after the collapse of FTX

Other methods work but are different:

*   SEO: Due to the volatility of search traffic, the rapid emergence of new keywords, and the overall low search volume in this niche, SEO for Web3 differs from other industries. See this article.
*   Community-building: Community-building is used in many industries, but only in Web3 has it become the primary vehicle for brand-building.

Finally, some things never change: Web3 marketers must use the sources available to understand their users and where they live online.

## On-chain and off-chain data in Web3 marketing

Because of the centrality of data in modern marketing, it makes sense to start with this section to understand the state of Web3 marketing.

One of the significant benefits of Web3 marketing is the ability to leverage on-chain and off-chain data. On-chain data is stored on the blockchain, such as transaction history, smart contract data, and other data related to blockchain activity. Off-chain data lives outside the blockchain, such as user behavior, social media, and other traditional marketing data.

Web3 marketers can use on-chain data to gain insights into user behavior, transaction history, and other metrics unique to blockchain activity. By analyzing this data, Web3 marketers can better understand user preferences and tailor their marketing campaigns accordingly. On-chain data can also be used to target users who have shown a particular interest in a specific cryptocurrency or blockchain project.

However, accessing and analyzing on-chain data can be challenging, as it requires technical knowledge of blockchain technology and navigating blockchain explorer tools. In contrast, off-chain data is relatively more accessible, but it still requires marketers to use sophisticated analytics tools and platforms to gain meaningful insights.

## Web3 Marketing Strategies

Web3 marketing strategies require a different approach than traditional marketing strategies, as they focus on engaging with a new and rapidly evolving ecosystem.

Here are some effective strategies that Web3 marketers can implement to succeed in this space:

1.  Community Building: Web3 projects are built on the foundation of decentralization, which emphasizes community-driven governance and decision-making. Building and nurturing a strong community is, therefore, a critical part of any Web3 marketing strategy.
